How to Quilt Hexagons

Hexagon quilts are so much fun! Depending on your fabric choice they can feel very modern or super traditional. With that in mind I have different design ideas for you that are both modern and traditional. For a few of the hexagons I used my favorite water soluble pen with a ruler to make registration lines. This helps me keep my designs symmetrical and it breaks down the shape into more manageable bite sized pieces.

Before I tried any of these hexagon designs on the machine I practiced them on paper. I have a hexagon worksheet available here for you to practice on.

Renee's Fabulous Studio!

After quilting hexagons it was time for our monthly Lookie-Loo tour, and this month's tour was a real treat! Renee was kind enough to let us peek into her quilting space and it was absolutely beautiful! Renee said the space was the previous homeowner's man cave, but it sure is perfect as a sewing room. And I think I need to invite Renee to the shop in Louisville to see if she can reorganize because she is a master organizer. I particularly loved her color coded fabric shelves and her thread drawers with pegs keeping every cone in place.

Angela's Favorite Things

You might think that I have a lot of favorite things, but really it's just that I always have a new favorite thing! :) This month I'm in love with a few new wide back fabrics from Windham fabrics.

Wouldn't each of these be beautiful on the back of a Civil War reproduction quilt? There's something about that Tan Lattice fabric that is calling me. I think it's because it looks like the cathedral windows quilting design - also called continuous curves. But we've already seen one of our renters use the Burgundy Berry Vine fabric for his quilt back and it looked fabulous! You can see the quilt here. Unfortunately I didn't get a picture of the back, but when you see the quilt top you'll probably understand why I was focused on the top.

How to Quilt the Quilt

Easily the most popular part of these live Clubhouse meetings is the Design Roundtable. I asked members of the Quilted Joy Clubhouse on Facebook to share a picture of their unquilted quilt tops and this month I chose Julie's lovely starry quilt. Julie's quilt had light colored North Star and Friendship Star blocks sitting on a black or dark green background. I loaded her photo into a free paint program on my MacBook called Paintbrush and I used a Wacom tablet to draw my design ideas on the photo. I shared my design process from beginning to end so you can see that I'm really just thinking about it one block at a time.

Show and Tell

I love to wrap up the QJ Clubhouse meetings with a little show and tell. There are so many talented quilters in the Quilted Joy Clubhouse on Facebook and they share lots of amazing quilts. It's fun to put a spotlight on their hard work and congratulate them on pretty ribbons from their state and county fairs!

The Quilted Joy Clubhouse Live Meetings occur on the first Wednesday of every month at 1pm Eastern. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday September 4. During September's meeting I’ll have special guest Pam Shartzer joining me to discuss what quilt judges are looking for. Pam has worked with the quilts division of the Kentucky State Fair for many years and has judged many competitions as well.
