You finished your quilt top! Now there's just one more big piece of fabric to figure out: the backing.

How much backing fabric you need depends on the actual size of your quilt and the width of the backing fabric you choose. If your quilt is going on a longarm, you'll also need extra fabric around all four sides so the backing can be properly loaded onto the machine.

For Rentals & longarm Quilting services at Quilted Joy, we ask for your backing to extend 4 inches beyond your quilt top on every side. That means your finished backing should be at least 8 inches wider and 8 inches longer than your quilt top.

If you’re quilting your quilt on a domestic sewing machine, you still want your backing a little larger than the quilt top so you have room to baste, handle, and quilt comfortably. You may not need the full 4 inches on every side that we require for longarm quilting, but a little extra backing gives you helpful wiggle room and makes the quilting process much easier.

The good news? Choosing the right amount of backing doesn't have to involve complicated quilt math.

How to Measure Your Quilt for Backing

Before buying your backing, grab a tape measure and measure your actual finished quilt top.

Don't rely only on the finished size listed on the pattern. Small differences in cutting, piecing, pressing, and seam allowances can add up across an entire quilt.

Here's what to do:

  1. Lay your finished quilt top flat.

  2. Measure the width through the center of the quilt.

  3. Measure the length through the center.

  4. Add 8 inches to the width and 8 inches to the length.

For example, if your quilt measures 60" x 70", your backing should measure at least 68" x 78".

Measure your actual quilt top before shopping for backing. The measurements printed on the pattern are a helpful starting point, but your finished quilt is the number that matters.

How Much 108" Wide Backing Fabric Do I Need?

One of the easiest ways to back a quilt is with 108" wide quilt backing fabric.

Standard quilting cotton is generally around 42" to 44" wide, which means larger quilts usually require multiple lengths of fabric sewn together. Wide backing gives you a much larger continuous piece of fabric, so many quilts can be backed without piecing the back at all.

Here's our quick guide for estimating how much 108" wide backing you'll need:

Quilt SizeApprox. Quilt Dimensions108" Wide Fabric Yardage
Baby36" square1 1/4 yards
Crib40" x 60"1 1/2 yards
Throw60" x 70"2 1/4 yards
Twin72" x 92"2 1/2 yards
Full86" x 92"3 yards
Queen92" x 96"3 yards
King100" square3 yards

Quilt sizes aren't standardized. A queen quilt from one pattern may be several inches larger than a queen from another. Use this chart as a starting point, then measure your finished quilt before purchasing your backing.

Why Does Quilt Backing Need to Be Bigger Than the Quilt?

That extra fabric isn't waste.

When your quilt is loaded onto a longarm quilting machine, the backing needs to extend beyond the edges of the quilt top so it can be properly secured to the frame and quilted all the way to the edges.

At Quilted Joy, we need 4 extra inches of backing on every side.

For example:

A 90" x 90" quilt needs backing that measures at least 98" x 98".

When you're deciding between "just enough" and a little extra, choose a little extra. It's much easier to trim backing after quilting than discover you're an inch short when the quilt is ready to load.

Why Choose 108" Wide Quilt Backing?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with making a pieced quilt back from standard-width quilting cotton. A pieced backing can even become another fun design element in your quilt.

But sometimes, after piecing an entire quilt top, you're ready to be done with piecing.

That's when wide backing is especially handy.

Because 108" wide fabric is more than twice the width of traditional quilting cotton, many quilts can be backed with one continuous piece.

That means:

  • Fewer or no backing seams

  • Less cutting and piecing

  • Less quilt math

  • Faster preparation for longarm quilting

  • One beautiful fabric across the entire back of your quilt

And if you want to make the process even simpler, that's where our 3-Yard Quilt Back Packs come in.

What Is a 3-Yard Quilt Back Pack?

A 3-Yard Quilt Back Pack is an extra-wide, approximately 108" pre-cut three-yard piece of fabric.

Since three yards is also 108", you're starting with an approximately 108" x 108" piece of wide quilt backing.

It's already measured and cut for you. No piecing several widths of standard fabric together and no trying to remember how many yards you need when you're standing at the cutting counter.

Just choose a print that looks fabulous with your quilt top and you've got a generously sized quilt back ready to go.

What Size Quilt Can a 3-Yard Quilt Back Pack Fit?

Three yards of 108" wide backing is a surprisingly versatile size.

According to our backing guide, 3 yards can work for many Full, Queen, and even King-size quilts, depending on the actual dimensions of your quilt top.

A few examples:

  • Full: approximately 86" x 92"

  • Queen: approximately 92" x 96"

  • King: up to approximately 100" square

Remember that a 3-Yard Quilt Back Pack is approximately 108" x 108", and we need 4 extra inches of backing on every side for longarm quilting.

If your quilt is approaching 100" in either direction, measure carefully before purchasing.

The name of the quilt size matters less than the measurements. If your pattern calls your quilt a Queen but it measures 101" wide, use the 101" measurement when choosing your backing.

Standard Quilting Cotton vs. 108" Wide Backing

So which backing should you choose?

Standard-Width Quilting Cotton

Standard 42" to 44" quilting cotton gives you an enormous selection of prints and colors. It's a great choice when you want to create a pieced, scrappy, or decorative backing.

The trade-off is that you'll usually need to cut and seam multiple lengths together for larger quilts.

108" Wide Quilt Backing

Wide backing is all about making that last big step a little easier.

For many quilts, you can skip backing seams completely. That means less measuring, less sewing, and less time standing between your finished quilt top and the longarm.

3-Yard Quilt Back Packs

A 3-Yard Quilt Back Pack gives you the convenience of 108" wide backing in an approximately 108" x 108" pre-cut piece.

For many Full, Queen, and King quilts, you can simply choose your print, check your measurements, and move on to quilting.

There isn't one right answer. Choose the backing that works best for your quilt and how much more piecing you feel like doing.

5 Things to Check Before Buying Quilt Backing

1. Measure Your Actual Quilt

This one is worth repeating.

Your pattern may say your quilt should finish at 90" x 96", but your finished top might be 89", 92", or somewhere in between.

Measure first. Shop second.

2. Remember the Extra 4 Inches

For longarm quilting at Quilted Joy, your backing should extend 4 inches beyond your quilt on all four sides.

Add 8 inches to both your quilt's width and length to find your minimum backing dimensions.

3. Check for Directional Prints

Look closely at your backing fabric.

Does it have words, animals standing upright, trees, stripes, or another design with an obvious top and bottom?

A directional print can change the way you need to position your backing, so check the design before cutting.

4. Account for Backing Seams

If you're using standard 42" to 44" quilting cotton, larger quilts will usually require multiple pieces of fabric sewn together.

Remember that you'll lose a little fabric in your seam allowances.

With 108" wide backing, you can often skip this step entirely.

5. Don't Cut It Too Close

Backing isn't the place to try to save the last couple of inches.

Your longarm quilter needs room to properly load and secure the fabric. A few extra inches are easy to trim away after quilting. A backing that's too small is much harder to fix.

One Less Thing Between You and a Finished Quilt

You've already chosen the fabrics, cut all those pieces, matched your points, pressed your seams, and turned them into a quilt top. Don't let figuring out the backing be the reason it sits unfinished.

Measure your quilt, add the extra 4 inches on every side, and choose the backing option that works best for you.

Maybe that's a fun pieced back made from traditional quilting cotton. Maybe it's beautiful 108" wide backing yardage. Or maybe it's a 3-Yard Quilt Back Pack that's already measured, cut, and ready to go.

Then get that quilt backed, quilted, bound, and onto the bed where it belongs.
