Quilt Kits from the PBS Show, Made in Louisville

These are the quilt kits you love in the Fons & Porter's magazine and on the PBS quilting show. Most were designed by Angela Huffman, who owns Quilted Joy and co-hosts Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting on PBS, and every one is a Quilted Joy exclusive. You will not find them at another shop.

Each kit is built around a pattern published in Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting magazine, with the fabric matched to the version that ran in print unless otherwise noted. The quilt you make is the quilt you saw.

They run from roughly $100 to $210, from a weekend throw to a bed-size quilt, and the techniques are varied on purpose. You'll find ombré and color transparency in some, flippy corners instead of paper piecing in others.

Fabric Only, or Kit With Pattern?

Every kit is sold in two versions and if you already subscribe to the magazine then you'll have the pattern in your copy.

Quilt Kit with Pattern includes the fabric plus the issue of Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting the pattern ran in, signed by Angela. Choose this if you do not subscribe, or if you want the signed copy.

Fabric Only costs less and is meant for subscribers who already have the issue on the shelf. It comes with no pattern at all, so check that you have the right issue before you choose it — each listing names the one you need. If you missed it, our autographed back issues are the fastest way to catch up.

A few of the earlier kits include the pattern as a PDF emailed after purchase rather than a magazine. The listing says which.

What Is Not in the Box

Backing and batting are not included. That is standard for quilt kits and it still catches people out, so order them at the same time rather than three weeks later, when the top is finished and you have lost momentum.

Our wide quilt backing comes 108 inches across, wide enough to finish most of these quilts with no center seam, and our 3 yard quilt back packs are already measured out for a throw.

Finished sizes vary by kit and are listed on each product page. Fabrics may vary too — mills sell out, and we substitute in kind rather than hold a kit hostage to one bolt.

Designed Here, Not Just Sold Here

The designs come with stories attached, which is what happens when the designer lives in the town. Run for the Rosies came out of Derby week in Louisville — rosebud blocks and a border of soft thorns. Lavender Roads came from flower fields Angela saw in France. Blueberry Jam started with a neighbor who shared homemade jam and fresh biscuits. Fuzzy Love is four cat faces, with space left in the borders so you can quilt in a name or a paw print. Flamingo Stampede is precisely what it sounds like.

The skill range is wide on purpose. Some reward precision piecing and careful value placement; others were built around simple methods so a newer quilter can finish something bright without paper piecing. Guest designers appear too — Wildflower Blossoms is Krisanne Watkins, pairing two values of each hue to make the blooms sit up off the background.

Frequently Asked Questions About Love of Quilting Quilt Kits

What is included in a Love of Quilting quilt kit?

Fabric for the quilt top and the binding, and — if you order the Quilt Kit with Pattern version — a copy of the Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting magazine the pattern was published in, signed by Angela Huffman.

Backing and batting are not included in any of them.

Should I order the fabric only version or the kit with the pattern?

Order Fabric Only if you subscribe to Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting and already have the issue named on the listing. Order the Quilt Kit with Pattern if you do not, or if you want the signed copy.

Fabric Only includes no pattern of any kind. It is the cheaper option for a reason.

Does the kit include backing and batting?

No. You will need to add both. For most of these quilts a 108 inch wide backing finishes the quilt in one piece with nothing to seam, and a 3 yard back pack covers a throw.

Check the finished size on the kit's listing, then add roughly four inches on every side for longarm loading.

Can I buy these kits anywhere else?

No. Every kit in this collection is a Quilted Joy exclusive. The patterns are published in the magazine and available to anyone, but the fabric selections and the kits themselves are ours.

Who designs the Love of Quilting quilt kits?

Most are designed by Angela Huffman, the owner of Quilted Joy and co-host of Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting on PBS. Guest designers appear as well — Wildflower Blossoms is by Krisanne Watkins.

What size do these quilts finish at?

It varies by kit, from throw to bed size. Lavender Roads finishes at 64 by 76 inches; Blueberry Jam at 70 by 84. Every listing gives the finished measurement.

Are these kits suitable for beginners?

Some are. Flamingo Stampede uses flippy corners rather than paper piecing and makes a good first project with some ambition to it. The ombré and color transparency designs are more rewarding once you are comfortable with accurate cutting and consistent seam allowances. If you are not sure which end of that range you are on, ask before you order rather than after.

Is the magazine really signed?

Yes, by Angela, by hand, before it goes in the box. It is not a printed signature.

What does "fabrics may vary" mean?

Fabric lines have production runs, and when a bolt sells out mid-run we substitute a comparable fabric rather than cancel the kit or make you wait. The design and the color relationships stay intact. If an exact fabric matters to you, contact us before ordering and we will tell you what is in the box today.

I missed the issue the pattern was in. Can I still get it?

Yes. We stock autographed back issues of Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting, and the Quilt Kit with Pattern version of each kit includes the correct issue anyway.

Can Quilted Joy help me choose a kit?

Yes, and this is a good thing to ask about rather than guess at. Tell a Quilt Fairy who the quilt is for, how much piecing experience you have, and whether you are quilting it yourself, and we will point you at the kit that fits.
