Young Makers Academy at Quilted Joy

A sewing experience for creative tweens and teens, ages 9 and up, who are ready to explore sewing in a fun, encouraging, and welcoming space.

Whether your child already loves crafting or is just getting started, this program helps them build real skills while growing confidence along the way. Students will not just learn how to sew. They will learn how to create something they are proud of.

Creativity, Confidence, and Real Skills

Students build real sewing skills while growing confidence with every project they complete.

    Grow Over Time

With 4 skill levels and 6 units per level, there's always something new to learn.

Two Wednesday Session Options

We know families are busy, so we offer two Wednesday time slots — one for those with flexible afternoon schedules, and one designed for students coming straight from a traditional school day:

  • Wednesday Afternoon Session — Wednesdays, 3:00–4:15 PM

  • Wednesday After-School Session — Wednesdays, 4:30–5:45 PM

Both sessions follow the same curriculum and give students the same incredible experience. Students enroll in one time slot and attend consistently throughout their session. Classes are held in our modern classroom at 12316 Shelbyville Road in Middletown, KY, a suburb of Louisville on the east side of the city.

Our modern classroom at Quilted Joy was thoughtfully designed with students in mind, and there is truly nothing like it in the Louisville area.

Every student has their own dedicated workstation and sewing machine. At the front of the room, a camera mounted directly on the teacher's machine needle feeds live to a large-screen monitor so every student can see exactly what the instructor is doing in real time — every stitch, every technique, up close. A classroom microphone ensures every student can hear every instruction clearly.

It is the kind of learning environment that makes a real difference, especially when you are just learning to sew and every detail matters.

Growing Skills, Step by Step

Skills build naturally from one unit to the next, helping students grow at a steady, encouraging pace.

Quilted Joy Sewing School uses the Sewciety Kids curriculum, a nationally recognized sewing program built specifically for young makers. Rather than one-off crafting activities, this is a true skill-building journey — one where your child can see real growth from session to session and year to year.

Students will explore every exciting corner of sewing, including:

  • Garment sewing — construction, fitting, and finishing real wearable pieces
  • Quilting — cutting, piecing, and assembling quilted projects
  • Accessories — fun, practical items that build confidence fast
  • Embroidery and appliqué — adding beautiful, personal creative details

The program is organized into 4 skill levels, each made up of 6 Units which are six-week sessions. Every session, students complete approximately two hands-on projects — and here is the best part: they never repeat a project. The further they go, the more exciting it gets.

  • A colorful chart titled Sewciety Kids Level 1 shows six units with images: a pillow, pajama shorts, apron, tote bags, pencil case, and round wall organizer, each representing a beginner sewing project for kids.
  • A sewing course poster titled Sewciety Kids Level 2 shows six units, each with a photo: a drawstring bag, a skirt, a fabric banner, an infinity scarf, a hoodie, a vest, embroidery hoops, a t-shirt, a fabric basket, and a dress.
  • A chart titled Sewciety Kids Level 3 shows six sewing project units, each with a photo: a floral bag, pants, a colorful pillow, a jacket, a shirt, a pencil case, patterned leggings, a tote bag, a ruffled top, and a round fabric basket.
  • A chart titled Sewciety Kids Level 4 displays five units with images: a girl in a blue jacket, a striped bag, a girl in a dress, a green backpack, and a colorful patchwork quilt.

How Classes Work

Each 75-minute class is designed to be engaging, encouraging, and genuinely fun. Students are never rushed. Skills build step by step so that learning feels natural and every win, no matter how small, is celebrated.

Here is what students experience every session:

  • Learn new techniques through real, hands-on projects
  • Build independence with sewing tools and machines
  • Gain confidence solving small creative challenges
  • Make friends who love making things just as much as they do
  • Walk away with work they are proud of

Classes are kept intentionally small at a 4:1 student-to-teacher ratio, so every child receives personalized attention and hands-on guidance in every single class. Nobody gets lost in the shuffle here.

Everything Is Provided! Just Show Up and Sew

No supply shopping. No stress. Quilted Joy provides everything needed for class, including:

  • All fabric, patterns, and project materials
  • Sewing tools and notions for every class
  • A dedicated sewing machine at their own individual workstation

The only thing students need is their Student Kit — a one-time purchase of $65 that includes all the personal tools, notions, and gadgets they will use throughout the program. They keep it, bring it to every session, and use it for as long as they are in the program. It is a one-time investment that lasts the entire journey.

Getting Started is Easy!

A simple, step-by-step path that helps your child feel confident from day one.

A young girl in a bird-patterned sleeveless top uses a Brother sewing machine to stitch light blue patterned fabric, concentrating on her work.

Step 1: Introductory Workshop

Before joining regular classes, every student begins with an introductory workshop designed to build confidence from the very first stitch. Students learn sewing machine basics, safety, cutting, pinning, and simple construction, all in a guided, beginner-friendly setting.

They will also complete a project from start to finish — a cinch bag they get to take home, giving them a strong sense of accomplishment and helping them feel ready and excited to continue into regular classes.

Step 2: Join Weekly Classes

After completing the introductory workshop, students move into weekly classes where their skills begin to grow.

Each class is part of a 6-week unit, giving students time to practice, build confidence, and complete projects they are proud of. As they continue, they move through skill levels made up of multiple units, with each step building naturally on what they have already learned.

In class, students will work on guided projects, learn new techniques, and gain confidence using sewing tools more independently. By the end of each unit, they leave with a finished project and a stronger sense of what they can do.

Life Happens. We've Got You!

We built flexibility into the program because we know schedules are not always perfect.

  • Each 6-week session includes up to two optional makeup days offered at various times, so a missed class does not mean missing out.

  • Life doesn't always follow a schedule — and that's okay. Students can pause after any 6-week session and simply register and pay for a future session when the timing works for their family. When they come back, their curriculum picks right up at the level they left off. No starting over, no missed progress — just pick a session and keep creating.

The curriculum is designed for this kind of flexibility, so there is no penalty for pausing and no need to start over

Classroom Fairies Needed!

Help us sprinkle a little magic into the sewing room. Classroom Fairies are the steady, encouraging presence that helps young makers feel comfortable and capable from the moment they sit down. You’ll assist with simple but important tasks like threading machines, pressing seams, cutting fabric, and keeping workspaces organized so students can stay focused and confident.

More than anything, you’re there to encourage. A kind word, a little guidance, or a quick helping hand can turn frustration into a proud finish. Classroom Angels help create a calm, welcoming environment where kids feel supported, celebrated, and excited to keep learning. No teaching experience is required, just a love of creativity and a willingness to help the next generation of quilters get started.
