Video: How to Quilt Feathers on an Inside Curve | Quilted Joy Clubhouse
Did you catch our May 2020 Quilted Joy Clubhouse live online meeting? This month was all about how to quilt feathers on an inside curve! If you missed the livestream it’s available to watch (or re-watch) whenever you’d like. Find it on the Quilted Joy Youtube channel!
Our main program for this month’s meeting was about how to quilt feathers on the inside of a curve. Watch the video below to learn all about quilting feathers and so much more!
How to Quilt Feathers on an Inside Curve
Last month we talked about quilting feathers on the outside of a curve, so for this month's meeting we looked at how to quilt feathers on the inside of a curve. Starting with a question mark curve, determine what the dead center of your quilting space is. Using a ruler or registration stencil, mark a few guidelines for yourself. Use these lines as a goal for where you want your feathers to reach.
Just like with many other quilting skills, it's so helpful to practice on paper before moving to your quilting machine. So don't forget to draw this over and over again! I also recommend starting with smaller feathers that don't completely fill the space so you can focus on the movements and directions of the feathers. As you feel more confident you can start making your feathers bigger and fill the space more.
Be sure to watch the video too. We had some great questions come up in the comments that I answered after our Looky Loo Studio Tour.
Jane's Big Baby Farm Quilting Studio
My friend Jane, who's also a member of my local longarm quilting guild, invited us into her beautiful quilting studio. I love that Jane calls their place Big Baby Farm, because she says they're all so spoiled! She has a big beautiful space with lots of natural light. She had a great tip for keeping her rulers organized - use tool cabinet anti-skid material or shelf liner to prevent the rulers from shuffling around too much in the drawer. I really loved Jane's recommendations to keep moving and keep learning! If you'd like to keep up with all the fun things Jane's doing, you can find her on Instagram here.
Angela’s Favorite Things
We’ve had lots of new products coming into the store throughout the spring and the products I’m most excited about are these Brightly Blooming fabric panels:
When we first saw these hanging at Quilt Market in Houston, we were in total awe of them! These printed fabric panels look like water color paintings with sweet phrases like “There are always flowers for those who wish to see them” and “You are so Loved.” I love using fabric panels like these to practice new free motion skills and these are no exception. Wouldn’t they look beautiful with swirling feathers or floral fillers? The panels are quite large too! They measure 56″ x 77″ – about the size of a throw. I can see these as great gifts for new mamas or graduating seniors! Check them out here in the shop!
How Would You Quilt It? Faye’s Flower Garden
Faye shared this gorgeous floral quilt over in the Quilted Joy Clubhouse looking for quilting design suggestions (and don’t miss the cute little guy helping to hold up her quilt!). For the How Would You Quilt It? portion of our Clubhouse meeting, I broke down how I might quilt her quilt with simple floral designs and straight line quilting. Thanks for sharing your quilt Faye! We can’t wait to see how you decide to quilt it!
The Quilted Joy Clubhouse Live Meetings occur on the first Wednesday of every month at 1pm Eastern. Our next Clubhouse meeting will be June 3, 2020 at 1pm Eastern/Noon Central.
