Did you catch our September 2020 Quilted Joy Clubhouse online meeting? This month we looked at how to quilt feathers in a diamond. If you missed the livestream it’s available to watch (or re-watch!) whenever you’d like. Find it on the Quilted Joy Youtube channel or on the Quilted Joy Clubhouse page on our website!

Our main program for this month’s meeting was about how to quilt feathers in a diamond. Watch the video below to see a few different methods and so much more!

How to Quilt Feathers in a Diamond

Throughout the year we've talked a lot about how to quilt feathers and how to fit them into a variety of shapes. We're going to use many of those concepts for fitting the feathers into diamonds.

Quilting feathers in diamonds can be a little challenging. And just like with most other quilting skills, it helps to practice on paper before trying to quilt on the machine. To help you out, we've created a little workbook of diamond shapes you can practice with! Click here to download the Diamonds Worksheet! This will be free throughout September 2020, so be sure to download your worksheet soon.

During the meeting we looked at 4 different ways to quilt feathers in diamonds:

  1. Feathers on a straight spine.
  2. Feathers on a s-curve spine.
  3. Feathers on a curled spine.
  4. Four curved feather spines with the diamond broken down into quadrants.

These are only a few of the ways to quilt feathers in a diamond! One of our viewers asked about beginning the feathers in the center of the diamond instead of the edges, and you absolutely could! Be sure to download the Diamonds Worksheet and practice these designs at home.

Jess's Bright and Airy Longarm Studio

For our Looky Loo Tour, we visited Jess Ziegler of Threaded Quilting and the Longarm League. She has her computerized APQS Millie set up in a den right off the living room. This location keeps her near her family, but because it's a separate room she can still close the door and focus on her quilting. Her space is beautiful, bright, and airy! Don't you love her ingenuity of using the floor planks to keep a straight cut on her batting? 😉 Thanks so much for sharing your space Jess! Be sure to follow her on Instagram @ThreadedQuilting (I love all her quilt pictures!).

Angela's Favorite Things - Premo-Soft & Magna-Soft

Have you noticed that thread is like candy to quilters? With all the colors and sizes it's easy to see why! For my favorite things this month I wanted to talk about my latest thread obsession - Premo-Soft Thread.

Premo-Soft is the sister thread to Glide thread. So if you and you're machine already love Glide, I have a feeling you'll love Premo-Soft too! Premo-Soft is a 50 weight polyester thread with a matte finish. It looks and quilts a lot like Superior Threads's So Fine, but it's at a better price point. Premo-Soft is available in more than 80 colors, and they have matching Magna-Soft prewound bobbins in 25 of those colors!

How Would You Quilt it? Bonnie's Modern Flying Goose Quilt

When Bonnie posted this quilt in the Quilted Joy Clubhouse looking for quilting suggestions I was immediately drawn to it's bright colors and scrappy piecing.

For the quilting I wanted to make the flying geese patches pop more. To do this I would trace or stitch in the ditch around the geese. To accent them even more, I would add stitched geese in the field of two inch squares next to the flying geese blocks. I would also add those stitched geese to the large white setting triangles too. I love the idea of using the piecing to inspire the quilting so they can mimic one another!

Show and Tell

I love to wrap up the QJ Clubhouse meetings with a little show and tell. There are so many talented quilters in the Quilted Joy Clubhouse on Facebook and they share lots of amazing quilts. It’s fun to put a spotlight on their hard work!

The Quilted Joy Clubhouse live meetings occur on the first Wednesday of each month at 1pm Eastern. Our next Clubhouse meeting will be October 7, 2020 at 1pm Eastern/Noon Central and we’ll be talking about five fun feather plumes. If you’d like to watch live, you can find us on Facebook in the Quilted Joy Clubhouse or subscribe to the Quilted Joy Youtube channel to be notified about our videos. Don’t worry if you can’t join us live. The video will remain available on both Facebook and Youtube afterwards so you can watch whenever you want!

Hope to “see” you at the next live meeting!
