Several members of the Pleasant Grove Baptist congregation came together to make this lovely quilt for the church. Each lady embroidered or appliquéd a panel about a different aspect of the church. Sandy then pieced it all together and brought it to me for a finishing touch of quilting. Because she's hoping this quilt will hang in the church for many years she really wanted a custom treatment. Quilt for Pleasant Grove Church with quilting by Angela Huffman - QuiltedJoy.com When quilting a top with large pieces, like the embroidered panels here, it's important to add some quilting just to be sure those pieces are really set down and secured to the quilt. In each panel I added a curling meander to the background, always being careful to avoid stitching over the embroidery and applique. For the main panel at the top of the too cool applique church, I used a meandering motif that reminds me of fluffy clouds being blown about on a blustery day. Applique Church with quilting by Angela Huffman - QuiltedJoy.com Can you see one of the panels is empty? No, she didn't forget a panel. That's where Sandy is going to add one more embroidered panel with information about the paster. But she wanted to be sure it was easy to replace, so years from now the congregation can easily update it to show the name of a new paster. And don't worry, Sandy promises the quilt will be enclosed, so the new panels shouldn't be falling out! I added some simple cross hatching just to pin the top down to the backing fabric. Penguin Curl Sashing Design by Angela Huffman - QuiltedJoy.com To finish it off, I added a repeated design to each cornerstone and the penguin curl to the sashing. I love the penguin curl design! It has a very formal feel and it's super fun to make. You can see the tutorial for how to quilt this design here. Pleasant Grove Baptist Church quilt with quilting by Angela Huffman - QuiltedJoy.com
