Every July, the Louisville Nimble Thimbles Quilt Guild gathers at Quilted Joy for one of our favorite traditions. For a single day, our APQS longarm machines are dedicated to a very special mission: transforming handmade quilt tops into finished quilts for children at Norton Children’s Hospital.
The guild’s Cuddle Care program creates colorful, comforting quilts that will soon find their way into the hands of young patients and their families. While the quilting itself happens in just one busy day, the project represents months of work from the guild members who carefully piece each quilt top ahead of time.

From Three Layers to a Finished Quilt
When the quilters arrive at Quilted Joy, each machine is loaded with three layers: backing fabric, batting, and the handmade quilt top. Using our longarm machines, volunteers stitch those layers together to create the finished quilt.
Many of the guild members are using a longarm machine for the very first time. Throughout the day, experienced quilters share tips, compare quilting designs, and help one another learn new skills. Quilted Joy team members are always nearby to answer questions and troubleshoot any technical hiccups along the way.
Before the decorative quilting begins, each quilt is carefully basted to keep the layers from shifting. Once secured, the real fun starts as the quilters add beautiful patterns and textures that make every quilt unique.

Learning New Skills Together
For many members of the Louisville Nimble Thimbles, this annual event is more than a service project. It is also an opportunity to learn the art of longarm quilting.
“Normally, we start out working on our little machines that sit on a table,” said guild member Debbie Hampton. “To have the opportunity to learn how to do it on these big machines is a wonderful educational experience for any quilter.”
While hand quilting remains a treasured tradition, longarm quilting allows volunteers to finish dozens of quilts in a single day, helping the guild reach even more children in need.

The Work Continues After Quilting Day
Once the quilting is complete, the quilts are rolled off the machines and taken home for the final steps. The guild gathers again the following week to add binding, the finishing edge that completes each quilt.
Then comes the most meaningful part of the project: delivering the quilts to Norton Children’s Hospital.
“The happy part,” one volunteer shared, “is getting the quilts to the kids. This is happy here, too, but that’s the real meaning behind all of this.”

A Tradition We’re Proud to Support
The Louisville Nimble Thimbles Quilt Guild has been making and donating quilts through the Cuddle Care program for years, and Quilted Joy is honored to support their work by opening our classroom and longarm studio each summer.
Watching quilters of all experience levels come together to learn, create, and give back is a beautiful reminder of what makes the quilting community so special.
Thank you to the Louisville Nimble Thimbles for the countless hours they invest in bringing comfort, warmth, and joy to children throughout our community.
