A Log Cabin Quilt for Purple Fans!

Vicki loves the color purple and obviously has an amazing stash of purple fabrics. She also loves making quilts for her family. Vicki recently brought this purple and white log cabin quilt in for me to quilt. The fabrics on this top are floral, but subtle because they are tonal prints. Up close, you can see the print, but from a distance, it gives the impression of a blender or even solid fabric. This is very contrasting, and the quilting plan will need to work across the entire top since it will be an edge-to-edge design quilted in one color of thread. You may recall a recent blog post in which I talked about thread choice. I tried different colors of thread on this top, ranging from white to purple and including various neutrals. White was too bright against the dark areas and purple was too dark against the white areas. The neutrals, especially gray, stood out a little too much against both backgrounds. The winner was a lavender color that talked a little on the white areas but almost blended on the purple areas. Vicki wanted something fun and not too formal for the edge-to-edge quilting design. We selected this fun feather pattern, which is dense and interesting and produces great texture. Its curviness also softens the strong lines of the highly contrasting log cabin blocks. Another aspect of this top that I want to point out is Vicki's very accurate piecing, which makes a longarm quilter's life oh so much easier. Her borders lay flat and her blocks do as well.
