Many of the quilts I quilt for customers receive an edge to edge design or a meander. But every once in awhile a quilt walks in the door that simply demands a bit of custom quilting. Kimberly made this adorable Ocean Odyssey Quilt by Lunch Box Quilts with lots of fun sea creatures. An edge to edge quilting design just was not going to do it justice. Sea Creatures are appliqued

Ocean Odyssey Sea Creatures Quilt by Kimberly, quilting by Angela Huffman of Quilted Joy Kimberly created each of her sea creatures with some well done machine embroidery applique. Besides fish, she even added some seaweed and a cute little crab. The fish are made up of such bright cheery colors and batiks. The background fabric, also batik, was a great watery blue. She did a great job of finding that perfect fabric to add to the border, a batik with just about every color out there. She used the same batik fabric for the backing fabric as well. What a happy cheerful quilt for a nursery or beach house!

I quilted Kimberly's quilt with a combination of hand guided free motion quilting and computerized quilting with my Intelliquilter. I echoed around each of the sea creatures and quilted a watery meander that avoided each fish. The swirls around each creature are reminiscent of water flowing around them. In the negative spaces in between the fish, I tucked in some shells, a few fish, and even a starfish all quilted perfectly with my IQ. All these lovely details can make this quilt really fun to look at. You never know what you are going to find next. I had so much fun quilting Kimberly's sea creatures quilt! I hope she and her family love finding the little surprises I was able to tuck into the quilting for them.
