Kids Sewing Classes Are Coming to Quilted Joy This Fall

Something special is coming to Quilted Joy and it is made for the next generation of makers. This September, we are launching the Quilted Joy Sewing School, a brand-new, structured sewing program for children, tweens and teens ages 9 and up in the Louisville, Kentucky area. It is hands-on, project-based, skill-building — and most importantly, it is going to be a FUN! Your child will leave every class with new skills, new friends, and at the end of the six week session two things made their own two hands.

Whether your child has never touched a sewing machine or already loves crafting, this program was designed to meet them exactly where they are.

Two Wednesday Session Options

We know families are busy, so we offer two Wednesday time slots — one for those with flexible afternoon schedules, and one designed for students coming straight from a traditional school day:

  • Wednesday Afternoon Session — Wednesdays, 3:00–4:15 PM

  • Wednesday After-School Session — Wednesdays, 4:30–5:45 PM

Both sessions follow the same curriculum and give students the same incredible experience. Students enroll in one time slot and attend consistently throughout their session. Classes are held in our modern classroom at 12316 Shelbyville Road in Middletown, KY, a suburb of Louisville on the east side of the city.

A Structured Curriculum That Goes Somewhere Fun

Quilted Joy Sewing School uses the Sewciety Kids curriculum, a nationally recognized sewing program built specifically for young makers. Rather than one-off crafting activities, this is a true skill-building journey — one where your child can see real growth from session to session and year to year.

Students will explore every exciting corner of sewing, including:

  • Garment sewing — construction, fitting, and finishing real wearable pieces

  • Quilting — cutting, piecing, and assembling quilted projects

  • Accessories — fun, practical items that build confidence fast

  • Embroidery and appliqué — adding beautiful, personal creative details

The program is organized into 4 skill levels, each made up of 6 Units which are six-week sessions. Every session, students complete approximately two hands-on projects — and here is the best part: they never repeat a project. The further they go, the more exciting it gets.

How Classes Work

Each 75-minute class is designed to be engaging, encouraging, and genuinely fun. Students are never rushed. Skills build step by step so that learning feels natural and every win, no matter how small, is celebrated.

Here is what students experience every session:

  • Learn new techniques through real, hands-on projects

  • Build independence with sewing tools and machines

  • Gain confidence solving small creative challenges

  • Make friends who love making things just as much as they do

  • Walk away with work they are proud of

Classes are kept intentionally small at a 4:1 student-to-teacher ratio, so every child receives personalized attention and hands-on guidance in every single class. Nobody gets lost in the shuffle here.

Everything Is Provided — Just Show Up and Sew

No supply shopping. No stress. Quilted Joy provides everything needed for class, including:

  • All fabric, patterns, and project materials

  • Sewing tools and notions for every class

  • A dedicated sewing machine at their own individual workstation

The only thing students need is their Student Kit — a one-time purchase of $65 that includes all the personal tools, notions, and gadgets they will use throughout the program. They keep it, bring it to every session, and use it for as long as they are in the program. It is a one-time investment that lasts the entire journey.

A Classroom Built for Young Learners

Our modern classroom at Quilted Joy was thoughtfully designed with students in mind, and there is truly nothing like it in the Louisville area.

Every student has their own dedicated workstation and sewing machine. At the front of the room, a camera mounted directly on the teacher's machine needle feeds live to a large-screen monitor so every student can see exactly what the instructor is doing in real time — every stitch, every technique, up close. A classroom microphone ensures every student can hear every instruction clearly.

It is the kind of learning environment that makes a real difference, especially when you are just learning to sew and every detail matters.

Start Here: The Required Beginner Workshop

Before joining regular sessions, all new students must complete our Beginner Workshop — a fun, standalone 2-hour class designed to set every student up for success.

In the Beginner Workshop, students will:

  • Learn how to safely operate a sewing machine

  • Practice basic cutting, pinning, and seam techniques

  • Complete their very first project: a cinch bag they get to take home

That cinch bag moment? It is magic. Many students walk in nervous and walk out already proud of what they made. The Beginner Workshop gives every child a confident, joyful start — no experience necessary.

Beginner Workshops are offered on multiple days and times to give families as much flexibility as possible. The first workshops begin in July 2026, right in time to prepare students for the September class launch. The workshop is $55 and has its own registration.

Life Happens — We've Got You

We built flexibility into the program because we know schedules are not always perfect.

  • Each 6-week session includes up to two optional makeup days offered at various times, so a missed class does not mean missing out

  • Life doesn't always follow a schedule — and that's okay. Students can pause after any 6-week session and simply register and pay for a future session when the timing works for their family. When they come back, their curriculum picks right up at the level they left off. No starting over, no missed progress — just pick a session and keep creating.

  • The curriculum is designed for this kind of flexibility, so there is no penalty for pausing and no need to start over

Pricing

Beginner Workshop (required, one-time) $55
Student Kit (required, one-time) $65
6-Week Session $250 (all fabric and supplies included)
Sibling discount 5% off each additional sibling enrolled

Siblings are welcome to join together — it is even more fun when you have a friend (or brother or sister) at the next workstation!

Help Make the Magic: Become a Classroom Fairy

As we prepare to welcome our first students, we are looking for a few warm, patient helpers to be part of the experience. We call them Classroom Fairies — and they are the heart of our classroom community.

What Is a Classroom Fairy?

A Classroom Fairy assists the instructor and supports our students. They help the classroom run smoothly while young makers are learning and creating. That might look like helping a student thread a needle, pressing a seam, tidying supplies between projects, or simply being a steady, encouraging presence when something feels tricky. Sometimes it is just being there to cheer a child on when they finally nail that straight seam. A Quilted Joy Quilt Fairy will lead the class and keep the curriculum on track. Our Classroom Fairy will help facilitate learning (and celebrate our students!)

Who Makes a Great Classroom Fairy?

If you are patient, warm, and enjoy being around creative kids, you are already a perfect fit. You do not need to be an expert sewist — just someone who loves supporting young people and being part of a welcoming, creative community. Many of our Fairies love quilting or sewing. Others simply love kids and creativity. Either way, you belong here.

It is a small commitment that makes a genuinely big difference in the life of a young maker.

Want to be part of it? We would love to have you. Click here to reach out to our team or stop by the shop to introduce yourself. We will share all the details and help you find the right fit.

A Creative Season Ahead

Quilted Joy Sewing School is more than a sewing class. It is a place where kids laugh, create, make friends, and discover what they are truly capable of — one stitch at a time.

We cannot wait to open these classroom doors in September and watch the magic happen. The projects, the friendships, the "I made this!" moments — they are all coming. And we would love for your child to be part of it.

Beginner Workshops start in July. Classes start in September.
