Lynn recently brought in this contemporary double wedding ring top to be quilted. This is a family gift to a couple who recently married. The quilt top appears to be Metro Rings, a design from Sew Kind of Wonderful. This pattern uses strip sets constructed of jelly roll strips. The strip sets are then cut into the curved arcs using the Quick Curve Ruler (QCR), also from Sew Kind of Wonderful. This makes for speedier, easier construction. One added bonus - if you are not wedded to the idea of the scalloped edges of a traditional double wedding ring quilt, this design gives you straight edges. (Did you catch my pun there?) For a backing, Lynn selected Spot On, one of our many extra-wide fabrics. It carries the contemporary theme of the top forward beautifully and relates well to the grayish-blue tint of some of the top's fabrics. So, how did I quilt this quilt? Lynn did not want custom quilting on this top since it was a wedding gift and she was working on a deadline. Custom quilting would be more expensive and would take longer than an all over or edge-to-edge design. We looked for an edge-to-edge design that would be simple enough that it wouldn't overwhelm the piecing of the top. We selected a design called Double Bubble, which is one of my favorites. It looks sophisticated, yet happy, and allows the viewer to focus on the beautiful array of blue fabrics in the quilt. After testing various greys and blues, I selected a periwinkle thread to quilt the design. Congratulations to the newlyweds!
