Jamie recently made this T-shirt quilt for her niece, Kelsey. You can tell from the shirts that Kelsey has been very active in dance and musical theater. I also got a kick out of the Gryffindor and Harry Potter shirt! But wait – we can also see track and soccer and U.S. Space Camp T-shirts, as well as shirts which we’re guessing have to do with studying French. Finally, Kelsey was president of her school’s service club – such a well-rounded young woman!
Jamie did an excellent job piecing the sashing for this quilt. Usually, I see simple sashings made of just one piece of fabric. Jamie chose to piece her sashings – some are checkerboards, and some were pieced from half-square triangles instead, making a really eye-catching border. Jamie also used different sizes of half-square triangles in her sashing for additional interest. We love to see creativity like this in T-shirt quilts – if you’re looking for more inspiration, we have several books here in the shop that are full of ideas!
I also loved Jamie’s choice of backing fabric. She picked a wide-back fabric called Hearts by Mary Fons. It’s so sweet and feminine and happens to match the hearts in the sashing fabric.
With all of the detail in this quilt, Jamie chose a meander for the quilting design so the T-shirts and sashing would shine. The result is a comfy, soft heartfelt gift that we’re sure Kelsey will love!
If you’d like to try making a T-shirt quilt for your loved one, Liz will be teaching the T-Shirt Quilt Camp on three consecutive Saturdays beginning July 30. These are great gifts to send off to college with your children or grandchildren. School is starting up soon, so call today to register!
