Techniques for Quilting Around Applique
I recently recorded an episode of the Fons and Porter Love of Quilting program all about techniques to use when quilting around applique quilts. The featured quilt for this episode was one I did for Pam that was just adorable. She made this for her lucky grand daughter and I'm ready to be adopted. :) It is all machine appliqued.
Each of the paper doll blocks features a different outfit.
I took this quilt to Sara so we could talk about thread choice and background quilting around applique. For this paper doll quilt I used string designs which you can see in the promo video below.
I love seeing my Mille on the set. She looks so impressive under the lights.
It can be intimidating trying to quilt with all those cameras and eyeballs looking at me. Plus, they expect me to speak English while doing it! Have you ever tried to talk while quilting? Try it sometime. It isn't for the faint of heart!
Adorable, yes? Each block is even more fabulous than the next and I had so much fun quilting this for Pam. I really loved playing in her border with a Garden Gate feather. I wrote about how to quilt this feather on the APQS blog and you can click here to see it! If you've never played with this type of feather, take the time to doodle this one. I've even made a worksheet with step by step instructions, click here to download it! It is so forgiving and beginner friendly. You'll love it!
Here's the promo video for Episode 3205 A Way with Applique. Love of Quilting airs on PBS so click here to find you local station and check your local listings to see when it airs in your area!
