Machine Information

The Akane MO-3000QVP is the serger for people who like the idea of serging more than the reality of threading one. Akane means deep red. It overlocks on 2, 3 or 4 threads with 1 or 2 needles, runs to 1,500 stitches a minute, and takes two jobs that put people off sergers entirely, threading the loopers and balancing the tension, and does both of them for you.

The front cover of the JUKI Akane MO-3000QVP swung open to show the looper area and the threading diagram printed inside, with a finger on the air threading button.

Air does the loopers

Drop the thread into the slot and press the button. A motor blows it straight through the looper, and you are done. No tweezers, no bending down with a flashlight, no threading in the order the manual insists on. The needles have an automatic threader of their own, so the whole machine is threaded in about the time it takes to describe it.

The LCD screen of the JUKI Akane MO-3000QVP showing a stitch diagram and its settings, with a finger on the arrow keys and the color marked thread guides above.

Pick the stitch, and the thread follows

Choose your stitch on the screen and the automatic thread supply system delivers the right amount of thread for it. Going from a 4 thread overlock to a rolled hem is a selection rather than an afternoon of test strips and dial nudging. The screen shows you the diagram for what you picked, and the thread guides along the top are color marked so you can see at a glance that you followed it.

A lever for the thick and the thin

The micro-lifter holds the presser foot up to 2.5mm off the fabric while you sew, which is what you want going over a fleece waistband or the folded edge of a winter coat. A knee lifter raises the foot 6mm without either hand leaving the work, and the throat is 2.6 inches high, so bulk has somewhere to go.

Two lights, and you choose the color

LEDs sit in two positions around the needle and the color temperature adjusts between a cool daylight white and a warmer one. Navy thread on black knit reads one way and cream on white reads another, and being able to change the light rather than the glasses is a small thing that saves an evening.

The details you notice in month three

A chain-off thread cutter takes care of the tail at the end of a seam. The foot controller has a heel function you assign yourself. Differential feed runs 0.7 to 2.0, so a knit hem lies flat or gathers on purpose, and stitch length adjusts from 0.7 to 4mm. There is a magnet tray on the machine for the needle you just took out, which tells you something about who designed it.

JUKI asks that the machine be serviced periodically by an authorized dealer to keep that warranty in force. Our bench is in Louisville with our own technicians on it, and a serger wants a clean more often than a sewing machine does, because that is where the lint goes.

How it compares to the Pearl Line MO-655

The Pearl Line MO-655 is the five thread machine, and its own reason to exist is the 2 thread chain stitch, which lets it sew and finish a seam in one pass as a safety stitch. The Akane MO-3000QVP is the one to look at if threading is what has kept you away from serging: air looper threading, the automatic thread supply, the micro-lifter and the knee lift are all on this machine. Call us and tell us what you sew, and we will tell you which one suits you.

Juki MO-3000QVP Akane Air Threading Serger — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the JUKI Akane MO-3000QVP?

The Akane MO-3000QVP is an overlock serger that threads its loopers with air. Akane means deep red in Japanese. It sews with 2, 3 or 4 threads on 1 or 2 needles, runs up to 1,500 stitches per minute, and has an LCD screen that shows the stitch you have selected.

How does air threading work on the MO-3000QVP?

You drop the thread into the threading slot and press a button. An electric motor blows the thread through both loopers in one go, which is the part of serging most people put off. The left and right needles have an automatic threader of their own.

What is the automatic thread supply system?

Instead of setting a tension dial for each thread, you turn the stitch selector and the machine delivers the right amount of thread for that stitch. Changing from a 4 thread overlock to a rolled hem stops being a tension adjustment session.

What is the micro-lifter for?

It holds the presser foot up to 2.5mm above the fabric while you sew, which helps over bulky layers like a fleece waistband or the edge of a winter coat.

What stitches does the MO-3000QVP sew?

4 thread overlock, 3 thread overlock, 3 thread narrow overlock and 3 thread rolled hem, with a changeover attachment for 2 thread work. Stitch length adjusts from 0.7 to 4mm and the differential feed runs 0.7 to 2.0, which is what keeps knits from waving.

Does the MO-3000QVP have a knee lifter?

Yes. It raises the presser foot up to 6mm without using your hands. The foot controller also takes an assigned heel function, so you can half-stitch, drop to low speed or cut the chain-off thread with your heel.

Can I finance the JUKI Akane MO-3000QVP?

Yes. Quilted Joy offers Shop Pay Installments, so you can split the purchase into payments. You will see an estimate under the price on this page and can check your eligibility in a few clicks.

What is the warranty on a new JUKI Akane MO-3000QVP?

JUKI America warrants a new home sewing machine to the original purchaser for five years on parts and two years on the motor, light assembly, wiring, switches, circuit boards and speed control. It covers normal household use in the United States and Canada, is not transferable, and asks that the machine be serviced periodically by an authorized JUKI dealer. Ours is that bench, here in Louisville.

Which Pixie Playdate class covers the MO-3000QVP?

The serger one. Your machine comes with free Juki Serger Pixie Playdate owner classes, and you can come back as often as you like. The mechanical and computerized Juki Pixie Playdates cover the sewing machines instead.

Why buy the MO-3000QVP from Quilted Joy?

Quilted Joy is a family-owned authorized JUKI dealer in Louisville, Kentucky, home of the Quilt Fairies and led by Angela Huffman, host of Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting on PBS. Our own technicians service what we sell, and we hold 4.9 stars on Google and a 98% recommend rate on Facebook.
