Machine Information

The MCS-1700QVP is the machine that puts the twin line of stitching on the hem of a ready-made t-shirt. It sews coverstitch and chain stitch on three needles at up to 1,350 stitches a minute. It does not cut fabric and it does not overlock, so most people own one beside a serger rather than instead of one, and it is the piece that makes home-sewn knits stop looking home-sewn.

A coverstitch being sewn on teal knit fabric by the JUKI MCS-1700QVP, with the presser foot and needles at work.

What a coverstitch actually does

Two or three rows of stitching on the face of the fabric, and a looper thread covering the raw edge underneath. The seam stretches with the knit instead of popping when someone pulls a t-shirt over their head. Hems, sleeve cuffs, neckbands and waistbands all want this stitch, and a regular sewing machine cannot make it.

The JUKI MCS-1700QVP threaded with red thread from a cone, showing the three needles, the presser foot and the throat plate.

Three needles, and the width is your call

Use two needles for a coverstitch at 2.5mm or 5mm wide, or three for a wide triple coverstitch. Take out all but one and the machine sews a chain stitch instead, which is a strong straight seam with a chain on the underside that suits a waistband or a trouser side seam, and looks deliberate enough to run face up as decoration. Maximum stitch length is 4mm.

The looper cover of the JUKI MCS-1700QVP swung open, showing the lower looper mechanism and the color threading diagram printed inside the cover.

The looper comes out to meet you

The lower looper threader disengages and swings forward, so you lay the thread into the slot in the open and snap the looper back into place, rather than feeding it into the dark with a pair of tweezers. The threading diagram is printed in color on the inside of the cover, which is where you want it, not in a book on the shelf.

The three needles of the JUKI MCS-1700QVP above its extension plate, which is engraved with seam guidelines at 1.5cm, 2.5cm and 3.5cm.

A hem you can keep straight

The extension plate widens the bed and carries seam guidelines engraved right into it, marked at 1.5cm, 2.5cm and 3.5cm, so a hem stays parallel without tape or a magnet. Differential feed keeps a stretchy knit from waving as it goes under, and presser foot pressure adjusts on a knob for the difference between a jersey and a sweatshirt fleece.

Room at the front for a folded hem

The front foot lifter gives 8mm of clearance, and 10mm at its highest, and the toe of the presser foot sits a little higher so a folded hem slides in at the start of a seam instead of jamming against it. A thread cutter on the outside of the machine trims the tail when you are done.

JUKI asks that the machine be serviced periodically by an authorized dealer to keep that warranty in force. Our bench is in Louisville with our own technicians on it, and like any machine that runs cones of thread, this one wants a clean more often than a sewing machine does.

Where it sits beside the sergers

A serger cuts and overlocks an edge. This machine finishes a hem on the face of the fabric. The Akane MO-3000QVP and the Pearl Line MO-655 are the overlock machines, and plenty of people run one of those next to an MCS-1700QVP and move the garment between them. If you are choosing your first of the two, call the Quilt Fairies at (502) 718-7148 and tell us what you sew most.

Juki MCS-1700 Coverstitch and Chainstitch Sewing Machine — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the JUKI MCS-1700QVP?

The MCS-1700QVP is a coverstitch and chain stitch machine. It uses three needles, sews up to 1,350 stitches per minute, and puts a professional finish on hems, sleeve cuffs and necklines in stretch fabric.

Is the MCS-1700QVP a serger?

No, and this is the question worth asking before you buy. It does not cut fabric and it does not overlock. It sews coverstitch and chain stitch, which is the finish you see on the hem of a ready-made t-shirt. Many people own one alongside a serger rather than instead of one.

What is a chain stitch used for?

The lower thread forms a chain on the wrong side of the fabric that stays strong when the seam is stretched, which suits the waist and side seams of pants. It also looks good as decorative stitching on a neckline.

What coverstitch widths does it sew?

2.5mm or 5mm, selectable, with a maximum stitch length of 4mm.

Is the MCS-1700QVP easy to thread?

The lower looper threader disengages and swings out, so you slide the thread into the slot and snap the looper back into place rather than reaching into the machine.

How thick a seam will it take?

Raising the foot lifter gives 8mm and 10mm of clearance, and the presser foot sits higher at its tip so a folded hem slides in at the start of a seam. Presser foot pressure adjusts on a knob.

Can I finance the JUKI MCS-1700QVP?

Yes. Quilted Joy offers Shop Pay Installments, so you can split the purchase into payments. You will see an estimate under the price on this page and can check your eligibility in a few clicks.

What is the warranty on a new JUKI MCS-1700QVP?

JUKI America warrants a new home sewing machine to the original purchaser for five years on parts and two years on the motor, light assembly, wiring, switches, circuit boards and speed control. It covers normal household use in the United States and Canada, is not transferable, and asks that the machine be serviced periodically by an authorized JUKI dealer. Ours is that bench, here in Louisville.

Which Pixie Playdate class covers the MCS-1700QVP?

The serger one. The Juki Serger Pixie Playdate covers the MCS-1700QVP as well as the overlock sergers, and it is free and unlimited with your machine. The mechanical and computerized Juki Pixie Playdates cover the sewing machines instead.

Why buy the MCS-1700QVP from Quilted Joy?

Quilted Joy is a family-owned authorized JUKI dealer in Louisville, Kentucky, home of the Quilt Fairies and led by Angela Huffman, host of Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting on PBS. Our own technicians service what we sell, and we hold 4.9 stars on Google and a 98% recommend rate on Facebook.
