Machine Information

The hem that says ready to wear

Turn a t-shirt inside out and look at the hem. Two parallel rows of stitching on the front, a looped chain covering the raw edge on the back, and the whole thing stretches with the fabric instead of popping. That is a cover stitch, and a regular sewing machine cannot make one. Neither can a serger. The Applaud is the machine that does, and then it goes further: its dual wiper system lays thread across the top of the stitch as it forms, so the hem can be decorative as well as correct.

The Applaud is a specialist, and it earns its place next to a serger rather than replacing one. If you are wondering whether you need a dedicated cover stitch machine or whether a combination serger would serve you better, that is exactly the conversation to have before you spend the money. Call us at (502) 718-7148 or send us an email and the Quilt Fairies and I will talk it through honestly.

The Creative Top Cover Stitch, and the wipers that make it

A patented pair of wipers carries thread back and forth in front of the needles and over the fabric as the stitch forms, laying a third thread across the top. Thread both wipers or only one. Run overlock thread through them for a clean functional finish, or a decorative thread for a hem nobody else has. Between the chain stitch, the narrow, wide and triple cover stitches and the top cover variations, that is twelve stitch options out of one machine.

Air threading, and no tension dials to balance

ExtraordinAir threading sends thread through the loopers on a gust of air, and the Advanced Needle Threader System handles the three needles. Automatic Thread Delivery then measures out exactly the thread each stitch needs, whatever thread you have loaded and whatever stitch length you chose, so there are no tensions to rebalance when you switch from a fine rayon to a heavy decorative thread. On a machine whose whole job is a visible finished hem, that is the difference between a good result and a test scrap.

Needle up, needle down, exactly where you want it

Press the needle up and down key to advance a single stitch at a time, start precisely on the fabric edge, or form a partial stitch. You can also program the needles to stop down so the work stays anchored when you lift the foot to pivot, or up so you can pull the piece away. On a cover stitch hem that has to meet itself at the end of a sleeve, being able to place the needle stitch by stitch is what makes the join disappear.

1,500 stitches a minute, or as slow as you want

The speed control lever sets the machine's top speed rather than asking your foot to hold it there. Run it flat out down a long straight hem, then slide the lever back before you work a decorative top cover stitch around a curve, and the machine simply will not run away from you. It is the control that lets one person do both production sewing and careful embellishment on the same machine.

Room for lofty fabric, and feed dogs that get out of the way

Raise the presser foot and the feed dogs drop automatically, so a quilted panel or a high-loft knit slides into position instead of catching on the teeth. The presser foot pressure dial adjusts up or down for the fabric in front of you and returns to standard without you counting turns. There are 5 inches of space to the right of the needle and three LEDs over the work, which matters when the stitch you are sewing is the one people will see.

Every machine we sell also comes with owner classes, which matter more than usual on a cover stitch machine, because most of what makes a hem look professional is technique rather than settings.

Baby Lock Applaud Deluxe Coverhem Machine — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Baby Lock Applaud?

The Applaud is a deluxe chain and cover stitch machine with the Creative Top Cover Stitch and a patented dual wiper system. It has ExtraordinAir looper threading, the Advanced Needle Threader System, Automatic Thread Delivery so there are no tensions to adjust, a needle up and down key, and a speed control lever up to 1,500 stitches per minute.

Is the Applaud a serger?

No, and this is the most important thing to understand before buying one. A serger trims the fabric edge and encases it in an overlock stitch. The Applaud does not cut and does not overlock. It sews chain and cover stitches, which is the professional stretchy double needle hem you see on ready to wear knits. Most people who own both use the serger to build the garment and the Applaud to finish it.

What is a cover stitch machine for?

Cover stitch machines create the double needle hems on t-shirts, activewear and knit garments, where two rows of stitching show on the front and a chain covers the raw edge underneath. The hem stretches with the fabric instead of popping. The Applaud adds decorative top cover stitching on top of that.

What makes the Applaud's Creative Top Cover Stitch different?

A patented pair of wipers carries thread back and forth in front of the needles and across the fabric surface as the stitch forms, laying a third thread over the top. You can thread both wipers or only one, with overlock thread for a clean functional finish or a decorative thread for something custom. With the top cover variations there are twelve stitch options in total.

Is the Applaud hard to thread?

No. ExtraordinAir threading sends thread through the loopers on a gust of air and the Advanced Needle Threader System handles the three needles. Automatic Thread Delivery then measures out the right amount of thread for the stitch you chose, whatever thread type and stitch length you are using, so there are no tensions to balance.

Can I pay for the Applaud over time?

You will see a Shop Pay Installments payment estimate on this page. Choose Shop Pay at checkout to split the purchase into payments if you qualify. You can also call the shop at (502) 718-7148 and we will walk you through the options.
