Three hundred stitches and a machine that reads the fabric
The Soprano is a computerized sewing and quilting machine built for someone who wants the room and the stitch range to spread their wings with their sewing. Three hundred stitches, ten one-step buttonholes, five alphabets, 8.3 inches of workspace to the right of the needle, a quilting extension table in the box and sixteen presser feet. The part that surprises people is the Automatic Fabric Sensor System, which sets the presser foot pressure and the tension for the fabric you put under the foot.
Angela Huffman, host of Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting PBS show and founder/owner of Quilted Joy.
The Soprano and the Lyric give you exactly the same 8.3 inches of workspace, the same speed and the same 7mm stitch width. What the Soprano adds is stitch range, two more feet and the fabric sensor. Let's chat! Call us at (502) 718-7148 or send us an email.

“I appreciated the time Angela took to answer all of my questions. I did not feel rushed and she supported me with information to do the necessary research to make a good decision.”

The Automatic Fabric Sensor System
Most tension problems are really pressure problems. Put four layers of denim under a foot set for quilting cotton and the feed struggles, the stitches shorten and you blame the thread. The Soprano senses the thickness of what you have put under the foot and sets both the presser foot pressure and the thread tension to match. You will notice it most at the moment you cross a seam allowance.

Buttons where your hand already is
Start and stop without the foot pedal, put the needle up or down, cut both threads, reverse, and set the top speed on a slider, all from the panel across the top of the machine. The machine runs to 850 stitches a minute and stays wherever you set the slider.

Advanced needle threader, automatic thread cutter
The advanced threader takes the thread through the eye with one hand and one motion. The thread cutter is automatic, on a button, so at the end of a seam both threads are cut and you are ready for the next one. Pivoting is automatic too and one of our absolute favorite features on any sewing machine: stop with the needle down and the presser foot lifts slightly so you can turn the fabric, which on applique and on anything with corners makes decorative stitches flow much more easily. You'll also love pivot when chain piecing. The needle goes down, the foot lifts up slightly automatically and you just slip the next fabrics in for piecing. Easy peasy!

Three hundred stitches you can find in seconds
Ninety-nine utility stitches, 94 decorative, 58 combined utility, 17 satin, 14 cross stitch, ten one-step buttonhole styles and five alphabets. The screen shows the stitch, the width and the length together, so setting up a decorative row takes one look. Stitch width goes to 7mm and length to 5mm. Feed dogs retract for free-motion work and the knee lift keeps both hands on the quilt while you do it. You'll love using the included alphabet letters for labels!

Other Machines to Consider
Baby Lock Soprano Sewing & Quilting Machine — Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Baby Lock Soprano?
The Soprano is a computerized sewing and quilting machine with 300 built-in stitches, 10 one-step buttonhole styles, 5 alphabets, 8.3 inches of workspace to the right of the needle, a quilting extension table and 16 presser feet. It also has Baby Lock's Automatic Fabric Sensor System, which sets presser foot pressure and thread tension for the fabric you put under the foot.
What is the Automatic Fabric Sensor System?
It senses the thickness of what is under the presser foot and adjusts both the foot pressure and the thread tension to match. You notice it most when you cross a seam allowance or move from quilting cotton onto four layers of denim, which is exactly where a stitch usually goes wrong.
How is the Soprano different from the Lyric?
They share the same 8.3 inches of workspace, the same 850 stitches a minute and the same 7mm stitch width, so the Soprano does not buy you more room. What it adds is 300 stitches against the Lyric's 250, 94 decorative stitches against 50, 16 presser feet against 14, retractable feed dogs, stitch memory and the Automatic Fabric Sensor System. If you mostly piece and quilt straight lines, the Lyric may be the smarter buy.
Is the Soprano good for quilting?
Yes. The quilting extension table is included, there are 8.3 inches to the right of the needle, the feed dogs retract for free-motion work, and a walking foot, a free-motion quilting foot, free-motion open toe and echo quilting feet and a 1/4 inch quilting foot with guide are all in the box.
Does the Soprano embroider?
No. The Soprano is a sewing and quilting machine only. If you want embroidery, look at the Vesta or the Aerial, or call the shop at (502) 718-7148 and we will walk you through the difference.
Can I pay for the Soprano over time?
You will see a Shop Pay Installments payment estimate on this page. Choose Shop Pay at checkout to split the purchase into payments if you qualify. You can also call the shop at (502) 718-7148 and we will walk you through the options.
