The quilting workspace, made BIG
The Lyric is a wonderful machine with all the features quilters love. Two hundred and fifty stitches, ten one-step buttonholes, five alphabets, a hands-free knee lift, an automatic thread cutter and 8.3 inches of workspace to the right of the needle, with a large quilting extension table in the box. That 8.3 inches is the number that matters: it is the same as the Soprano above it, and it is what lets a folded quilt sit in the harp instead of fighting back as you work with it.
Angela Huffman, host of Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting PBS show and founder/owner of Quilted Joy.
Here is the honest comparison. Against the Brilliant below it, the Lyric buys you sixty more stitches and a much bigger sewing bed. Against the Soprano above it, you give up the pivot feature, decorative stitch range and the fabric sensor, but the workspace, the speed and the stitch width are identical. For a lot of quilters that makes the Lyric the sensible one but be sure you see that pivot feature in action on the Soprano before you make your decision because it's like heated seats- once you have it you'll wonder where its been all your life. Call us at (502) 718-7148 or send us an email and we will work through it with you.

The extension table is in the box
A 20 3/4 by 12 5/8 inch quilting extension table comes with the Lyric rather than being the accessory you discover you need after the first quilt. It turns the free arm into one flat surface so the weight of a quilt is supported instead of dragging off the edge and pulling your seam crooked. With 8.3 inches to the right of the needle and 11.88 inches of sewing bed, this is a machine you can put a real quilt through.

Two hundred and fifty stitches
Ninety-nine utility stitches, 58 combined utility, 50 decorative, 17 satin and 14 cross stitch, plus ten one-step buttonhole styles and five alphabets for labeling a quilt. Stitch width goes to 7mm and length to 5mm. It is enough decorative range to finish an art quilt or a garment properly, and every beautiful stitch is on a chart you can read at a glance. Keep in mind the Lyric has a manual tension knob whereas machines further up the line are smart enough to control the tension for you.

An LCD screen and buttons, not a touchscreen
The Lyric uses an LCD screen with a panel of physical buttons around it. The screen shows the stitch, the width and the length together. Start and stop, needle up and down, reverse and the automatic thread cutter are all on buttons too.

Quick-Set bobbin, advanced needle threader
The bobbin winds on the top deck and drops straight into the machine under a clear cover, with no threading order to memorize and nothing to bring up from underneath. It takes standard Class 15 bobbins. The advanced needle threader puts the thread through the eye with one hand and one motion.

The knee lift, and both hands on the quilt
Tap the lever with your knee and the presser foot lifts. On a quilt that matters more than on anything else, because the moment you take a hand off to reach for a lever is the moment the weight of the quilt pulls your seam off line. A walking foot is among the fourteen feet included, so layers feed together from the start giving you a beautiful stitch.

Other Machines to Consider
Baby Lock Lyric Sewing and Quilting Machine — Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Baby Lock Lyric?
The Lyric is a computerized sewing and quilting machine with 250 built-in stitches, 10 one-step buttonhole styles, 5 alphabets, a hands-free knee lift, an automatic thread cutter and 8.3 inches of workspace to the right of the needle. A large quilting extension table and 14 presser feet come with it.
Is the Lyric good for quilting?
Yes, and it is the machine most of our customers land on when they start quilting seriously. The 8.3 inches to the right of the needle is the same as on the Soprano above it, the extension table is included, a walking foot and a 1/4 inch quilting foot with guide are among the 14 feet, and the knee lift keeps both hands on the quilt.
Does the Lyric have a touchscreen?
No. The Lyric uses an LCD screen with a panel of physical buttons around it. The screen shows the stitch, the width and the length together. Buttons work with a thimble on and do not mis-register, so for plenty of people this is a preference rather than a compromise, but it is a real difference from the machines further up the range and we would rather you knew.
How is the Lyric different from the Brilliant?
The Lyric has 250 stitches against the Brilliant's 190, and a much larger sewing bed: 11.88 inches against 8 1/8, with 8.3 inches to the right of the needle. Both run at 850 stitches a minute, both include 14 feet and 5 alphabets, both have an advanced needle threader, an automatic thread cutter and a knee lift. The Lyric's upgrade is stitch count and quilting workspace, not electronics.
How is the Lyric different from the Soprano?
The Soprano adds 50 more stitches, two more presser feet, retractable feed dogs, stitch memory and the Automatic Fabric Sensor System. The workspace, the speed, the stitch width and the weight are identical. So the Soprano buys decorative range and automation, not more room to quilt.
Can I pay for the Lyric over time?
You will see a Shop Pay Installments payment estimate on this page. Choose Shop Pay at checkout to split the purchase into payments if you qualify. You can also call the shop at (502) 718-7148 and we will walk you through the options.
