Virginia recently brought this top in for me to quilt. Look at all these gorgeous floral fabrics! With so much going on visually, developing a quilting plan can be challenging. Here's how we made choices for this quilt. First, Virginia knew that she wanted the quilting to have an overall nature theme with all those floral fabrics. She also wanted to separate the piano key border, also made up of florals, from the center of the quilt. Thus, a panto for the center and a custom border seemed to make the most sense. With all of the color and complexity, any quilting is going to be secondary to the fabric choices, so we chose a panto called Just Leaves that is, frankly, just leaves. This panto filled the center of the top from edge to edge. Virginia has a red "stop border" that is just an inch wide, so we left it unquilted and quilted right up to it on both sides. In the outer border, I chose a double-swirl motif that I quilted in each of the piano keys. This motif is relatively simple and quick to execute, a good choice for a busy border where effort will not be very visible. I used a white thread to quilt the top. This color worked best from one floral to the next and on the white background in the center. A light green would have spoken more loudly against that background and Virginia wanted the floral fabrics to be the stars. Thank you, Virginia, for bringing your top to Quilted Joy for quilting!
