Shirtings Quilt
Quilting of yesteryear involved using scraps of fabrics from worn out clothes into quilts to keep your loved ones cozy in the winter.
Dianna brought this quilt to me to finish and she wasn’t sure about its history. However, looking closely at the fabrics I’m quite sure this was a memory or memorial quilt made from pieces of shirts from a man’s shirts. I’m quite sure this top was pieced with prayers and tears.
The top was not square or flat so the quilting had to be simple so as not to introduce pleats or puckers. The basic simple meander is a great all over, edge to edge pattern to use when you have to maneuver around fullness. This quilt didn’t end up perfectly square but it was in the neighborhood of square. 🙂
