Our Renters Play with Shapes
The thing that makes quilting so much fun is the variety and possibilities that are out there of what you can do. From time honored classics, to more modern works of art, quilts come in all shapes and sizes. The following are a couple of quilts that used shapes as their inspiration.
Kim created this top to practice on. The staggered stripes is a fun pattern that would be great to play with color and fabric choice. She practiced all sorts of different free motion designs on this. If you look carefully you’ll see what looks like our Honey Drops panto at the beginning, and then it shifts to different designs on the subsequent blocks. There is even a name written in cursive on one of the blocks. Quilting with a longarm machine can be very easy and rewarding so you can have some real fun with it.
This is a creation from a brand new long arm quilter, Pam. She quilted this charming color blocked quilt with a pantograph called Kashmir. I like that this pantograph has a floral feel, while at the same time not strictly floral. It works well for this black and gray quilt. I think the ombre of the large blocks is amazing.
Kecia was also a certification student with this extra large flying geese quilt. With so much solid open space, you can really see the quilting pattern she chose. This is the Lorien’s Paisley pantograph. She did a great job.
Lynn’s quilt is a gift for a future grandson and is made up of small triangle of 30’s fabric. She made this from a pattern called Confetti that she found in a magazine.
I fell in love with some of the "confetti" pieces in her quilt. The fabrics were so cute, I think my favorite was this print with the little chicks! The pantograph is also appropriately named, Airborne. Doesn’t it look like a bunch of confetti that is floating about, airborne if you will.
With all these letters, doesn’t adding words make sense? Colleen free motioned this quilt top with words and some stars between simple meandering lines.
With such complicated fabric, the straight forward design of the quilt stands out beautifully. It’s very striking.
This is a pieced quilt top by Beverly following a pattern by Jennie Doan called Quartered Stripes. Beverly has masterfully cut and pieced striped fabric to create this illusion of squares on squares. If you look closely, she even got the colors to line up to form the squares. She quilted it with the Turbulance pantograph which added some subtle whirls into this mesmerizing quilt top. Wow!
Squares, rectangles, and triangles are all shapes that we see often in quilting. With some creativity and no small amount of patience, our renters can really make them stand out and become something to see.
