I love seeing our renters finish their tops into quilts. Sometimes the most satisfying finishes are the projects that have been on hold for a while, years or even decades. Here are a few of those recent projects - enjoy! Renee brought in this vintage top that was pieced by a family member. It is made of Virginia Reel blocks, which are pairs of flying geese units set so that they create a spiraling impression. If you look closely at the quilt, you will see ginghams and stripes and flowers in a style not used often these days. This may have been made from leftover fabrics used in home or family wardrobe sewing. There are even some blocks where substitute fabrics were used, as if the piecer ran out of the initial fabric. I love the personality this gives the quilt! Renee chose a light grey thread and the Orange Peel design board to quilt this beauty. This next top sat in Virginia's UFO closet for a long time. She started this project with a panel, which she cut apart and set using an attic window design so that it would look like the deer was standing outside her home. She found the perfect backing for it here at Quilted Joy - a camouflage-like brown hand-dyed wideback fabric. Virginia chose a medium brown thread to quilt her design and used the Ground Cover pantograph to add vines and leaves to her quilt. Look at this vintage beauty! Diane brought this top to Quilted Joy recently and we all admired it while it was here. I believe this one was hand-pieced. The blocks are all Rolling Stars, except in one outer border, where they are half LeMoyne's Stars. See how the piecer planned the solid colors at the corners of the blocks? The overall setting is like a Trip Around the World, but rectangular instead of square because the quilt was intended to be used on a rectangular bed. Diane quilted this top using the Toss Up pantograph and a light neutral thread that blended well with all the values in the fabrics.
