Every so often, a customer brings me a stamped cross-stitch top to quilt. These quilts often have been sitting in closets for years, waiting for attention, and it's time to give them the love they deserve! Marjorie's top was 100" by 100" with the more recently added borders. She was so delighted to get it quilted at last and thought that an edge to edge design would be just perfect. An edge to edge design, which covers the entire top, is quilted without regard to block or border placement so this does mean that I quilted over her stitched areas. Since this was done in a very thin thread matching the background, it didn't distract the eye from her cross-stitching. Because of the size of the top and Marjorie's budget, I suggested an allover meander in white thread. You may see some blue staining or bleeding in some areas of the quilt. These quilts almost always came with suggested hand quilting lines stamped in blue dots, but over time, the dots may have been set by heat or may have changed chemically with exposure to light or humidity. Someone may have tried to remove them with a stain remover that didn't react well with the blue dots. In another scenario, the whole top may have been washed by hand which could have caused the pinkish areas where the floss bled. My suggestion to Marjorie would be to do some research on the web on how to remove these specific stains, then give it a try. Here is the finished result. Once she's bound, she'll be ready for her debut at last!
