Jodi's Blue Starry Sampler
Samplers are a type of quilt that has been around for a while. Originally, before there were books of patterns and the internet, women would stitch together a single block as a way to store a pattern. Many people have found stacks of these blocks in attics bound by string, some stitched on one side like books. Later on, sometimes much later on, the blocks would be stitched together to form a quilt. Now a days, people create sampler quilts as a way to explore styles or hone technique. They are beautiful and make us think about the way things were in a simpler time.
Jodi made one such quilt herself. The colors are all similar and beautifully matched, so you know that she set out to make this sampler quilt as an organized choice, and not just an afterthought of collected blocks. Blues and browns with just a touch of subtle green go together so beautifully. It’s where the earth touches the sky.
The blocks are similar in overall design with a basic eight point star, but each block is unique in this set like a true sampler quilt.
The quilting we did for her is called Lime Tree. It is a beautifully simple leaf pattern consisting of a few gentle swirls and some lime shaped leaves.
Some of the fabrics she chose contained some subtle leaf designs. This nodded to the nature themed fabric and added a beautiful swirling movement to the otherwise straight corners of the stars.
Whether you want to recreate an element of the past, or just try out different techniques and build your skills, a sampler quilt should be on every quilter’s to do list at some time in his or her life.
