Imogene’s Log Cabin
The Log Cabin quilt has been around for awhile, but it still manages to take my breath away. There are so many different ways to play with color placement to create really imaginative and fun designs!
Imogene created this Log Cabin as a gift for a relative. For those natives in Louisville, it comes as no surprise that this is a University of Louisville quilt to pay homage to their favorite university.
Imogene chose a combination of solids and patterns to create this tri-colored quilt. I thought this was a creative way not to stray from the school’s colors without compromising the look of the log cabin, with a gradient half being light, and the other dark.
Using three fabrics, black on white, white on black, and finally black on black patterns, she was able to get that variation in the dark fabrics without introducing gray or other colors. The light side was done the same way. She used a solid red, a solid white, and a red and white patterned fabric (no pink). The border uses two of the red fabrics and introduces a red on black fabric to frame it all.
She picked one of my most popular quilting patterns. This was quilted with a pinched square spiral. The spacing of this pattern allows the points of the spirals to meet on all sides, giving the design an orange peel feel. It adds some curve and movement to a very straight edged quilt top, while adding another structured element that compliments the log cabin completely. What a beautiful gift!
