Machine Applique Flower Quilt

Here are some more photos of the Flower Garden quilt I just finished. I used Fil-Tec’s Glide thread in the top, Superior’s Bottom Line in the bobbin. YLI nylon monofilament around the applique and Hobbs 80/20 Heirloom for the batting.

Feather fill background applique

I used a feather fill behind the applique. It was a little hard deciding what to do with the background because the applique crosses over the setting triangles. I knew that I’d have to select something that also crossed the seams in the setting triangles. Using a feather design just seemed to work with the flowing lines of the flowers. I did everything freehand and I found that using the APQS Quilt Glide feature on the machine for the background fill really helped in those tiny spaces. Of course, having Bliss on my APQS table made moving the machine effortless.

I used my own twisted arch design in the outside border and corner but I used a freehand feather design in the sashing that relates back to the feathered background fill.

That sashing design is so easy to stitch out and I love making it. I’ll post a short video tutorial in the next couple of days to show how easy this design is.

Cornerstones feather borders

The cornerstones between the sashing pieces just got a simple arched flower using an 8-piece grid stencil to break the square up and freehand the arches from the center out.

Pam hasn’t seen her quilt yet- she is on vacation. I’m looking forward to sharing it with her.
