Book Review: Quilting by Design by Jessica Schick
Have you ever thought about designing your own quilting patterns? Would you like to know more about how to make your design motifs bend into pantographs and block motifs? Then you should learn at the foot of the master! Jessica Schick runs one of the largest pattern companies in the quilting world, digitechpatterns.com.
She creates a host of incredible designs and in this book you get to pick her brain and see how she formats and breaks down designs to create a host of complimentary patterns.
Plus, this book includes 155 free motion designs AND a CD with all of the patterns in the book already digitized. While they can be printed via the PDF file for each design, the designs also come in the following file formats on the enclosed CD: CQP, DXF, GFP, HQF, IQP, PLT, QLI, SSD, TXT. They also come in the following embroidery formats: CSD, DST, EXP, HUS, JEF, JEF+, PES, SEW, SHV, VIP, VP3, XXX.
While computerized quilters will be immediately drawn to this book for its staggering amount of patterns that can be imported into your computerized quilting system, even those without a computer on their quilting machines will enjoy this book.
For free motion quilters, I love that she includes little arrows that show the direction to take when making her patterns so you can easily see the path. Jessica also includes information on how to print out/format your own pantographs using your home printer.
The chapter on how to design a wholecloth quilt is fantastic. Jessica breaks down the proportions and the math to show how to think about the structure one uses to make a wholecloth so the entire process will make sense.
I was so excited to see Jessica's new book. I learn something every time I talk to her and this book lets me nestle down to really learn how she sees the pattern world. Plus, I get 155 of her patterns for the cost of the book too!
