Seahorses for a Baby Boy
Jackie brought me this top to quilt for her. Don't you love the seahorse fabric? To give you an idea of the scale of the printed design, this is a baby quilt! It will be a gift for a very lucky little boy.
Jackie said she's relatively new to quilting. Even as a beginner, she has a natural instinct for fabric placements. Look how the directional seahorse print is pieced so the quilt has a clear top and bottom. I sometimes make a very conscious decision to avoid directional fabrics so I don't have to worry about how I piece my blocks. Jackie did an excellent job keeping track of where her fabrics went!
We picked a pantograph for the quilting design that would provide lots of texture while being relatively gender-neutral. Wisteria incorporates leaves with more abstract geometric shapes like swirls and hooks so it fit the bill perfectly. I love how the quilting drifts across the quilt. It moves the eye across the quilt with the patchwork color changes.
I used a medium grey thread to quilt the top - the colors range from white to navy, so it was important to pick something that worked across all values.
Congratulations to the new baby and his parents!
