Speaking of great ways to learn how to quilt - Arline's gorgeous Cherry Hill sampler is a perfect example of a great way to start piecing. Arline is in no way a beginner, but she decided to join a block of the month club. This particular club is set up so you pay $5 the first month for a block's pattern and fabric. As long as you bring the block back completed at the next month's meeting, you get that month's pattern and fabric free! So, at the end of the year you could have a huge quilt top made for just $5! What makes it perfect for newbies is that the meeting each month demonstrates exactly what techniques are used to make the block. You learn a bite sized amount each month and get the satisfaction of completing something each time. Plus, it could only cost you $5! (If you slip up you can always buy the month you miss for just $5.) This is the way I learned to piece. I still have the blocks down there in my studio, but I've never put them in a quilt top. Yet another UFO, I suppose (Unfinished Fabric Object). Arline added pre-printed panel blocks to anchor her quilt. I wish I had taken a photo of the back! It was like a whole other quilt top. I told her she had made a reversible quilt. It is beautiful no matter which way she flips it! Arline wanted an all over edge to edge pattern on this quilt and I used the Lime Tree pantograph. The shapes mimicked the leaf motif in the fabrics and looks wonderful on the quilt top. It was the first time I'd used this edge to edge pantograph and I really liked it. I used a chocolate brown thread and Hobbs Heirloom Premium 80/20 for the batting. She was thrilled!
