I recently found some old issues of the Love of Quilting magazine in my closet from a VERY long time ago. Back when I was a baby quilter the magazine would bring me such joy to see all the techniques and patterns. I wanted to learn everything I could about quilting!
Imagine my “pinch me” moment when the editors of the Love of Quilting magazine asked me to design their 25th anniversary commemorative quilt! Such an honor. And… so much pressure! I wanted it to be a celebration of techniques and fabric so I chose to design a medallion quilt.
It took me a while to come up with the design but once I found the Porch Swing fabric line designed by Ashley Collett with Riley Blake it all came to life. Have you spotted the little birds flitting about and tucked into the branches just yet? Love it!
Quilting Secret Meadow
I really struggled with how to quilt it, though. All the white space can be so intimidating but the secret is to break down big spaces into smaller spaces. That makes things much easier. I decided to use straight line quilting to draw the eye to the center and fill the four main quadrants with freehand feathers. I did use my computer for the design in the very center block and the accent LeMoyne stars that were quilted into the background. The rest of the quilt is all done free motion with my APQS Millie30.
I couldn’t share the final quilt with anyone until the second half of the pattern was unveiled as this was rolled out as a two mystery quilt. But, now I can show it off and I hope you can see my Love of Quilting in this special top.
