Machine Information

The Haruka TL-18QVP is the newest of JUKI's straight stitch machines, and it was built for people who already know a straight stitch is what they want. Haruka means beyond. Underneath the covers it is the aluminum die-cast, single needle lockstitch body the TL series has run on for years, sewing anywhere from 55 to 1,500 stitches a minute with 8.5 inches of room to the right of the needle. What is new sits under the presser foot.

One stitch, done properly

There is no stitch menu on this machine and no screen to read. The arm and bed are cast aluminum rather than molded plastic, so the machine holds still while the needle runs, and a straight seam comes out the same length at the end as it was at the start. Chiffon, quilting cotton, waxed canvas and faux leather all go under it without a conversation.

The float function, and why it is the headline

A dial lifts the presser foot a hair off the fabric, anywhere from 0 to 2mm, and holds it there while you sew. This is a micro-lifter borrowed from JUKI's industrial machines. Set a little float and the top layer feeds in step with the bottom one, so a quilt sandwich comes out the size it went in, velvet keeps its nap, a knit hem stays flat, and the stitch length holds as you climb onto a thick seam allowance and back off it. It is the one thing on the TL-18QVP you cannot get anywhere else in the TL line.

Somewhere for the quilt to go

The extension table widens the flat surface so the weight of a quilt rests instead of hanging off the edge and dragging your stitches sideways. Drop the feed dogs with a lever and the quilt is yours to steer. Set the needle to stop in the down position and it waits there, holding your place, however long you take to move your hands. The knee lifter takes the presser foot up 12mm without either hand leaving the work.

The rest of what is on it

A close view of the sub-tension unit on top of the JUKI Haruka TL-18QVP beside the JUKI logo, with thread running through it toward the needle.

Sub-tension unit. Steadies the upper thread before it reaches the discs, which is what keeps fine thread and heavy thread both sitting right.

The automatic thread trimmer mechanism of the JUKI Haruka TL-18QVP, exposed below the needle plate.

Automatic thread trimmer. A button or a rock back on the pedal cuts both threads, and you can start sewing again without fishing the bobbin thread up.

The automatic needle threader of the JUKI Haruka TL-18QVP engaged at the needle, with the thread looped through.

Needle threader. A lever carries the thread through the eye, so a needle change at the end of a long evening is still a ten second job.

The attachment mounting plate of the JUKI Haruka TL-18QVP holding a fabric guide against olive green fabric, with an inset of the plate itself.

Attachment mounting plate. Fabric guides and binders screw to a separate plate rather than into the bed, and the plate can be replaced if its holes ever get worn.

The lit needle area of the JUKI Haruka TL-18QVP, showing the throat plate and presser foot under the LED.

Four position LED. A switch by the needle sets the light to high, medium, low or off, so dark thread on dark fabric and white on white each get what they need.

The JUKI Haruka TL-18QVP sewing through a folded stack of heavy dark denim, with the free arm and bobbin area visible.

Free arm and heavy fabric. The arm comes free for cuffs and bag corners, and a folded stack of denim goes through at the same stitch length as a single layer.

JUKI asks that the machine be serviced periodically by an authorized dealer to keep that warranty in force. We are that dealer, and the bench is here in Louisville with our own technicians on it, so a clean and a timing check does not mean shipping your machine to a stranger.

How it compares to the TL-2010Q and the TL-15

All three are aluminum die-cast straight stitch machines running to 1,500 stitches a minute with a sub-tension unit, an automatic trimmer and a knee lift. The TL-2010Q is the long-serving one, with four presser feet in the box. The TL-15 is that same machine with a quilter's accessory set: five feet including a front open toe free-motion foot, plus the walking foot guide bars. The Haruka TL-18QVP adds the float function micro-lifter, the attachment mounting plate and the four position light, and it will crawl down to 55 stitches a minute when you want to place every stitch yourself. Call us and tell us what you sew, and we will tell you which one we would put you on.

Juki TL-18QVP Haruka High Speed Sewing and Quilting Machine — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the JUKI Haruka TL-18QVP?

The Haruka TL-18QVP is a single needle lockstitch sewing and quilting machine with an aluminum die-cast body. Haruka means beyond in Japanese. It sews straight stitch only, from 55 up to 1,500 stitches per minute, with a maximum stitch length of 6mm.

What is the float function on the TL-18QVP?

It is a micro-lifter borrowed from JUKI's industrial machines. The presser foot floats from 0 to 2mm above the fabric, which keeps stitches even across a thick seam, over velvet, and on knits that would otherwise stretch as they feed.

How is the TL-18QVP different from the TL-2010Q?

Both are aluminum die-cast straight stitch machines that sew at 1,500 stitches per minute. The TL-18QVP adds the float function micro-lifter, an attachment mounting plate for fabric guides and binders, and a switch at the needle that sets the LED to high, medium, low or off. Call the Quilt Fairies at (502) 718-7148 and we will help you choose.

Can the TL-18QVP do free-motion quilting?

Yes. A lever drops the feed dogs, and the knee lifter raises the presser foot up to 12mm so you can reposition a quilt without letting go of it. By lever the foot lifts 10mm.

What is the attachment mounting plate for?

It is a separate plate for installing fabric guides and binders. Because the plate takes the wear rather than the machine bed, it can be replaced if the mounting holes get damaged.

What needles and thread does the TL-18QVP take?

Needle system HAx1, also sold as 130/705H, or HLx5, in sizes 9 to 18. A sub-tension unit keeps the upper thread balanced whatever weight you are running.

Does the TL-18QVP trim its own threads?

Yes. A button or the foot pedal trims both needle and bobbin threads, and you can carry on sewing afterward even when the bobbin thread is not showing above the throat plate.

Can I finance the JUKI Haruka TL-18QVP?

Yes. Quilted Joy offers Shop Pay Installments, so you can split the purchase into payments. You will see an estimate under the price on this page and can check your eligibility in a few clicks.

What is the warranty on a new JUKI Haruka TL-18QVP?

JUKI America warrants a new home sewing machine to the original purchaser for five years on parts and two years on the motor, light assembly, wiring, switches, circuit boards and speed control. It covers normal household use in the United States and Canada, is not transferable, and asks that the machine be serviced periodically by an authorized JUKI dealer. Ours is that bench, here in Louisville.

Why buy the TL-18QVP from Quilted Joy?

Quilted Joy is a family-owned authorized JUKI dealer in Louisville, Kentucky, home of the Quilt Fairies and led by Angela Huffman, host of Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting on PBS. Our own technicians service what we sell, and we hold 4.9 stars on Google and a 98% recommend rate on Facebook.
