Eight inches by fourteen, and a needle beam to place it
The Ursa is an embroidery machine. It does not sew, and if you already have a sewing machine you love, that is good news, because everything in the Ursa went into embroidery instead. You get an 8 by 14 inch field, 914 built-in designs, a 7 inch color touchscreen, and an LED pointer in the included foot that shows you exactly where the needle will land before you commit to a stitch.

If you are cross-shopping, the machine to look at beside this one is the Luna. It is the same embroidery platform with a full sewing machine built in, so it comes down to whether you want one machine on the table or two. If you think a dedicated embroidery machine is best for you then one up the line would be the impressive Reflection. We are glad to talk it through with you. Call (502) 718-7148 or send us an email and tell us what you like to make.

Fourteen inches in one hooping
The field is 8 by 14 inches, or 200 by 360mm, and both hoops come in the box with their frame sets: the full 8 by 14 and a 5 by 7. Fourteen inches covers a jacket back, a row of a quilt, a long towel border or a wall hanging panel in a single hooping. You will find that a lot of the designs you already own were drawn for a field this size and will finally stitch in one piece.

You can see where the needle will land
The Needle Beam projects a small LED point onto the fabric so you can preview where the design will sit before anything is stitched. That pointer lives in the UH+ embroidery foot, and the UH+ foot is one of the two feet included with the machine. Two-Point Positioning goes a step further: mark two reference points on your project, and the Ursa moves and rotates the design to line up with them for you. On a pocket, a placket or a quilt block that has to sit square, this is the feature you will reach for again and again.

Resizing that redraws the stitches
When you shrink or enlarge a design on the Ursa, it recalculates the stitches instead of simply stretching them, so the density stays the way the digitizer intended. This is an incredibly powerful feature. The range is 60 percent down to up to 200 percent bigger. A design you love at 4 inches can become a 7 inch version of itself and still stitch cleanly, so your existing collections stretch further than you would expect.

914 designs, and 23 fonts to letter them with
There are 914 designs built into the machine, grouped into categories that will interest quilters in particular: quilting motifs, French knot, couching, crochet lace and 3-D applique. Add 140 frame patterns and 23 built-in fonts, including a couching alphabet, and there is a great deal here before you buy a single design collection. Matrix Copy will repeat a design across the hoop in a grid, which is how you fill a whole block or make an allover pattern in one pass.

Yarn couching, with the foot in the box
Couching lays a strand of yarn onto the surface of your fabric and stitches over it, so the design sits up off the cloth with real texture and weight. The Ursa comes with the couching foot Y and its guide, plus a two-thread spool stand sized for yarn and larger cones, so you can try this the week your machine arrives. There is a couching alphabet and a set of crochet couching designs built in, and the bundle adds a four-sole couching foot set and the Design Suite Yarn Couching Collection.
Check on your embroidery from the next room
The Ursa connects to your wifi, which does two useful things. Designs move from your computer to the machine wirelessly through Baby Lock's free Design Database Transfer software, and the machine tells you when an update is ready. The other thing is the IQ Intuition Monitoring app: it shows you how far along a project is on your phone or tablet, and it lets you know if the thread breaks, if it is time for a color change, or if the design has finished. On a large design that runs for an hour, you can go start dinner.
Where the Ursa sits in the line
The Flare is our entry embroidery machine and a lovely one, with a 6¼ by 10¼ field and 293 designs. The Ursa is the machine you move to when you want a bigger field, a much larger design library, the placement tools and the app. Above it, the Reflection at about adds a 9.5 by 14 inch field, 1,050 stitches a minute and a 10.1 inch screen. And beside it, the Luna is this same embroidery machine with a sewing machine built in. Any of our machine matchmakers here can talk you through which one fits what you actually make.

Baby Lock Ursa Embroidery Machine with Free Embroidery Bundle — Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Baby Lock Ursa sew?
No, the Ursa embroiders. Baby Lock builds it as a dedicated embroidery machine, which is why it has an 8 by 14 inch field, 914 designs and placement tools rather than a stitch library. If you would like sewing and embroidery in one machine, the Luna is this same embroidery platform with a full sewing machine built in.
How big is the embroidery field, and what hoops come with it?
The field is 8 by 14 inches, which is 200 by 360mm. Two embroidery frame sets come in the box, the full 8 by 14 and a 5 by 7. Fourteen inches lets you stitch a jacket back, a quilt row or a long towel border in one hooping.
What is the Needle Beam and the Two-Point Positioning?
The Needle Beam is a small LED point projected onto your fabric so you can see where the needle will land before you stitch. It lives in the UH+ embroidery foot, which is included with the machine. Two-Point Positioning lets you mark two reference points on your project so the Ursa moves and rotates the design to line up with them for you.
Can the Ursa resize my designs?
Yes, and it recalculates the stitches rather than simply stretching them, so the density stays the way the digitizer intended. Dealers list the range as 60 percent up to 200 percent, which means a design you like at 4 inches can be stitched considerably larger and still look right.
What is Matrix Copy?
Matrix Copy repeats a design across the hoop in a grid so you can fill a whole block or create an allover pattern in one pass instead of stitching each repeat separately.
Can I do yarn couching on the Ursa?
Yes. Couching lays a strand of yarn onto the fabric and stitches over it, so the design has real texture and sits up off the cloth. The couching foot Y with its guide comes with the machine, along with a two-thread spool stand sized for yarn, and there is a couching alphabet and a set of crochet couching designs built in. The current bundle adds a four-sole couching foot set and the Design Suite Yarn Couching Collection.
How do I get my own designs onto the Ursa?
Wirelessly over your wifi using Baby Lock's Design Database Transfer software, which is a free download, or on a USB stick. The Ursa reads .pes, .phc and .dst files.
What does the IQ Intuition Monitoring app do?
It lets you watch a running project from your phone or tablet. You can see how far along the design is, and the app tells you if the thread breaks, when it is time for a color change, and when the design has finished. On a design that runs for an hour, you can go and do something else.
Can I pay for the Ursa over time?
Yes. Shop Pay Installments is available at checkout, so you can split the purchase into payments. You will see the option and the estimated payment on the checkout page, and you are always welcome to call us at (502) 718-7148.
What warranty comes with the Ursa?
Baby Lock covers the Ursa with a 25 year limited manufacturer's warranty, 10 years on parts, 5 years on the circuit board, 5 years on electrical components and 1 year of labor. Warranty service is done here in Louisville by our own factory-certified technicians, and any Baby Lock dealer in the country can service it under warranty if you live elsewhere.
