Machine Information

190 stitches, and the small things that keep you sewing

The Brilliant is the machine for someone who has outgrown a starter machine. It carries 190 stitches, five alphabets and ten one-step buttonholes, but the features that change your day are quieter than that: a knee lift so both hands stay on the fabric, a thread cutter on a button, a needle that stops in the needle down position, and a walking foot comes standard in the box rather than on a wish list. It is part of Baby Lock's Genuine Collection, built for garments, home decor and quilts without asking you to choose.

The comparison chart above is the one we wrote ourselves, because the honest answer to "which beginner machine should I buy" depends on what you sew. If you want to talk it through rather than read it, call us at (502) 718-7148 or send us an email. The Quilt Fairies and I will happily point you at the Jubilant instead if the Brilliant is more machine than you need. Or, go one step up and take a look at the Presto.

“Bought my sewing machine here, today got help matching fabric to patch a quilt. Women owned, lovely location, like the tone of their customer service.”

Close-up of the advanced needle threader on the Baby Lock Brilliant sewing machine.

The advanced needle threader

Threading a needle shouldn't be challenging and a machine that can thread itself is one of those little blessings in life we love. A few simple motions and the Brilliant threads it for you, every time, without the near-misses. This short video walks through it.

The stitch reference chart printed inside the flip-up top cover of the Baby Lock Brilliant, above the bobbin winder and a spool of yellow thread.

190 stitches you can actually find

Seventy-one utility stitches, 41 decorative, 17 satin, 11 cross stitch, 40 combined utility and 10 one-step buttonhole styles, plus five alphabets for labeling a quilt or monogramming a bag. The full chart is printed inside the flip-up cover, so choosing a stitch is a matter of finding it visually and selecting it simply rather than hunting through a manual. Stitch width goes to 7mm and length to 5mm, both adjustable on screen.

A hand selecting a stitch on the LCD control panel of the Baby Lock Brilliant, with the stitch chart open above the machine.

Buttons to make everything easier

Start and stop without the foot pedal, put the needle up or down, cut the thread, and reverse, all from buttons beside the LCD screen. The screen itself is 3 5/16 by 1 3/4 inches, which is big enough to read the stitch number and the width and length together. Variable speed control caps the machine wherever you set it, so a first seam on a slippery fabric runs at your pace rather than the motor's, and the machine tops out at 850 stitches a minute when you want it to move.

The knee lift is the one people underrate

Tap the lever with your knee and the presser foot lifts, so both hands stay where they belong: on the fabric. Anyone who has pivoted at a corner while reaching behind the machine for the lever knows exactly how hard that can be. On patchwork, on applique, on anything that turns, this is the feature that quietly makes your points meet. There are 8 1/8 inches of bed to the right of the needle to give a quilt somewhere to sit while you do it.

The Quick-Set drop-in bobbin area of the Baby Lock Brilliant with the clear cover open.

Quick-Set bobbin, and fourteen feet in the box

The bobbin drops in and sets itself and no need to bring it up. It takes standard Class 15 bobbins, so replacements are easy to find and we sell them at Quilted Joy. Fourteen presser feet come with the machine, and the two that matter most for quilters are among them: a walking foot for keeping layers together and a free-motion quilting foot, plus a 1/4 inch quilting foot for piecing (love this foot). Retractable feed dogs drop for free-motion work.

Baby Lock Brilliant Sewing Machine — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Baby Lock Brilliant?

The Brilliant is a computerized sewing and quilting machine in Baby Lock's Genuine Collection. It has 190 built-in stitches including 10 one-step buttonhole styles and 5 alphabets, an advanced needle threader, a detachable knee lift, an automatic thread cutter, push button controls and 14 presser feet in the box.

Is the Brilliant good for quilting?

Yes. It comes with a walking foot, a free-motion quilting foot and a 1/4 inch quilting foot, the feed dogs retract for free-motion work, and there are 8 1/8 inches of sewing bed to the right of the needle. The knee lift matters more than people expect on patchwork, because it keeps both hands on the fabric when you pivot at a corner.

How is the Brilliant different from the Jubilant?

The Jubilant is the smaller, lighter machine at $699 with 80 stitches and 7 feet, built to be carried to a class. The Brilliant has 190 stitches, 14 feet including a walking foot, a knee lift, an automatic thread cutter, a larger screen and a wider bed. If you piece and quilt regularly, the Brilliant is the one that will not need replacing. Download our beginner machine comparison chart on this page, or call us at (502) 718-7148.

What bobbins does the Brilliant take?

Standard Class 15 bobbins, which are easy to find and inexpensive. The bobbin is a Quick-Set drop-in, so there is no threading order to get right and no need to bring the bobbin thread up before you sew.

Can I pay for the Brilliant over time?

You will see a Shop Pay Installments payment estimate on this page. Choose Shop Pay at checkout to split the purchase into payments if you qualify. You can also call the shop at (502) 718-7148 and we will walk you through the options.
