Three Memorial Quilts from our Longarm Renters
Some of us are hoarders. We like to keep things that have long past their usefulness. But how do you throw away something that reminds you of happy times? How do you throw away something you’ve held onto for decades? Some of us just can’t do it. But then the question is what do we do with it? T-shirts, clothes, anything made of fabric can be transformed into a useful item. There are many different ways to make a memorial quilt. Our longarm machine renters quilted these three examples of unique memorial quilts.
Judy quilted this memorial quilt for a friend. Her grandmother hand stitched this beauty to window sheers as foundation! The fabrics include quilting cotton, flannel, polyester, and who knows what else! It's so fun to see vintage quilts like this because of the clever ways quilters reused other materials.
Judy quilted it with the square spiral paper pantograph. This panto is genderless and dense which really helps to anchor down all those hand stitched pieces. The friend thought the unquilted top was a little ugly. Judy recognized this is someone’s life in fabrics and nothing could be more beautiful. I have no doubt her friend will cherish this precious family heirloom because of Judy's hard work.
Deborah is also quilting this memorial quilt for a friend. The friend created this for her son's birthday gift. The shirts in this quilt are from kindergarten all the way to senior in high school. Deborah appliqued the shirts onto the quilt so the collar and sleeves are maintained. Isn't that clever and different? The cub scout uniform has enough collar to tuck the kerchief in place and even had the bear scout slide. We had to remove both to quilt it, but she planned to hand stitch them down later. How fun is that?
Amanda's quilt is a totally different take on a memorial quilt! It is one of many that adorn the halls of a local private school. Each year all the students in the graduating class create a single block by hand. Amanda pieced the blocks together and quilted them here at Quilted Joy. The completed wall hanging is displayed in the halls of the school. They remain there as a reminder of all the students who came before. It was fun to see what each student came up with for their block. The students were new to hand embroidery, so it's amazing to see their creativity shine!
It doesn’t take much to make something beautiful out of remnants of something else. A little know how can go a long way though, so be sure to research a little to ensure success with your project. Interfacing is amazing stuff. So go dig out grandpa's old shirts or grandma’s old aprons and make something beautiful and memorable for yourself!
