Here is a contemporary quilt that I recently quilted for Susan. This is an interesting design because each block is a tessellation. A tessellation is a shape which interlocks with itself when turned different ways. According to the rules, it cannot be a square, and in this case, the shapes are kind of like the letter "H". M.C. Escher is one artist who is particularly famous for this. The pattern "Tessellating Tabbies" by Jinny Beyer is a fun example of this concept in a quilt. Susan's quilt is made entirely of batiks and includes all of the colors of fall - reds, golds, greens, and rust. One challenge was finding a neutral thread that would blend across all these shades. I opted for a canvas-colored thread - not too light on the dark fabrics, not too dark on the light fabrics. This quilt was quilted in an allover design - in this case a meander - to give it texture but without distracting from the design. I love the border batik, with its floral swirly design. We often joke that this rusty color must be my favorite, since it often follows me home from a shopping trip. If you look at the blocks, they may also remind you of the 1980s computer game Tetris...
