Patriot Quilt for Love of Quilting Show
What is the oldest UFO (Unfinished Object) in your quilting studio? For me, it was this quilt which I made in the aftermath of 9/11. I was so distraught during this time of heartbreak in our country. The only way I knew how to channel all of that grief was through quilting. I decided to take the Patriot Quilt to demonstrate on the 3200 series of the Love of Quilting PBS show. Sara and I enjoyed playing with the many techniques this quilt has to offer. This quilt has a wide border to play within and when tackling a large space it's important to plan. I either sketch out what my thoughts are using Quilter's Paper or I'll draw on a photo of the quilt within my computer. You can see that I used the paper method for this quilt. I'm doodling designs here to audition motifs. I love that the actual block in Patriot quilt is just a plain wide square because it's just so easy! It is the diamond rectangle sashing that does the heavy lifting with those square in a square units. To call back to those diamond units I quilted large diamonds in the border and nestled curved crosshatching arcs between them. Inside the diamonds I dropped in feathers because I wanted it too be a bit more formal. In the blocks I placed a simple motif that you can see a bit more easily from the back. I've also included a photo of the border from the back so you can see more of the sashing. Patriot quilt will be featured in the Love of Quilting magazine and on the 3206 show of Love of Quilting on PBS. Check your local PBS listings to see when it will air in your area.
