Melanie's Butterfly Quilt
Art and craft hobbies are something we do because we enjoy them. Which means that we tend to create things right up until we can’t anymore. What this means is that our loved ones are often left with not only beautiful creations made with our hands, but with half completed creations as well. That happened to Melanie. She came into possession of some beautiful butterfly appliqued blocks that someone in her family made. With the help of a grandmother, she put the top together but asked us to finish the quilt for her.
Butterfly Top
The butterflies on Melanie’s Butterfly Quilt are a riot of color. It looks like each one may be unique. The bodies are all black and the backgrounds are all white. We don’t know enough about the original maker to know where they got their fabric.
Was the fabric purchased for this function or did they use scraps from other quilts or shirts from loved ones? You can imagine this style of quilt would be an amazing way to memorialize the life of someone with their dresses or shirts. The sashing is a solid purple with a fun paisley cornerstone.
Loralie Quilting
The edge to edge design that she chose was Loralie. It is a great open bubbly design with large blossoms all over it. They are the perfect landing place for those butterflies. She also purchased her backing from us.
The Bouquet Floral Green was a great choice for the colors in this quilt. We get to see so many quilts, but we rarely see them completed. However, this is one we were able to see through to the end as she had us bind the quilt as well. Using the backing as binding is a great way to finish a quilt.
Add a label
What a beautiful heirloom to hand down through the generations! It’s always fun to have things that have been worked on by multiple generations. Attaching a label is not a service that we provide, but it is one of the things I highly recommend. You don’t know where each quilt will end up. Date them, sign them, write a little something so that future generations will know where each quilt came from. It may not seem like a big deal to you, but your descendants will love it. I imagine someone in the future will love knowing where Melanie's Butterfly Quilt came from!
