Excited to start sewing but overwhelmed by all the machine options out there?
You're not alone! With so many brands, features, and price points, choosing the right sewing machine as a beginner can feel like threading a needle in the dark. But don’t worry! Our experts at Quilted Joy are here for you. In this guide, we’ll break down the best sewing machines for beginners so you can start stitching with confidence.
Whether you're looking for an affordable machine to dip your toes into the world of sewing or the perfect gift for someone just getting started, choosing the right entry-level machine can make all the difference. Let’s dive in!
What to Look for in a Beginner Sewing Machine
Not all machines are created equal, especially when you're just starting out. Here's what to keep in mind:
1. Ease of Use
Look for machines with straightforward controls, clearly marked dials, and features like automatic needle threaders and top-loading bobbins. Look for a machine with the thread path clearly marked making threading the machine easy. Simplicity is key!
2. Built-In Stitches
When you are just getting started you likely don’t need hundreds of stitches. A good beginner sewing machine typically includes 10-30 stitches, covering basics like straight, zigzag, and buttonholes.
Are you a garment sewist? Look at the utility stitches and buttonhole stitches as well the ability to sew through thicker fabrics like denim. Are you a home dec sewist? You'll want a variety of overlock stitches and you'll want a larger throat space to accommodate those bedroom drapes you've been dreaming of. Are you a quilter? Look for the ability to put the machine in the needle down position and you'll want a machine with a quarter inch pressing foot to get the right size seam for your projects.
3. Durability & Build Quality
Did you know a sewing machine has a skeleton? It's true! The interior structure or frame your machine is made of is important. Be sure your machine has a metal interior frame for better long-term durability. Here at Quilted Joy we don't recommend machines with a plastic interior frame. This is because the metal needle bar shaft and the shaft holding the hook/bobbin area must be kept in time to make a stitch.
When you have a plastic interior frame these two shafts are screwed into plastic making the timing between the two fragile and precarious. Unfortunately machines with a plastic interior frame aren't repairable in most cases. So, while they may be cheaper, don't expect them to serve you well over time. All of the machines at Quilted Joy have a metal interior frame because we know that even beginners will love them!
4. Portability & Size
Compact machines are great if you’re tight on space or plan to take it to classes. Full-size models offer more room to grow. Consider the weight of the machine and how easy it is to lift and move.
Also, don't forget to look at the size of the throat. That's right! Sewing machines have a throat! This refers to the opening of the machine from the right of needle to the machine's body. Most beginner machines have a small throat space of 6"-8". If you will be sewing larger projects, consider getting a larger throat.
5. Price Range
You can find excellent entry-level machines under $350. A slightly higher price tag can mean more features and better quality. Those additional features can enhance the ease of use and offer an array of sewing opportunities to grow into.
6. Education
Your sewing adventure is about to start and you'll find it much more fun with some basic lessons. Evaluate the machine dealer you are buying from. Do they have classes that come with your purchase? Do they respond to your questions in a way that is easy to understand? Your dealer will be your guide so choose one you like and trust!
7. Sewing With A Child?
Picking out a sewing machine for your favorite kiddo is fun and teaches them a great life skill. Look for a machine that has speed control so you can limit the speed of the needle. And, find a machine that won't sew if the foot on the machine isn't in the down position. They don't always remember to put the foot down and having a machine that prompts them for this important step is incredibly helpful.
8. Bonus Features
Things like free-arm sewing that accommodates pant legs and sleeves are key for basic clothing alterations. LED lighting makes things easy to see. A variety of included presser feet are useful for the variety of sewing you'll do. And, adjustable stitch length/width make your sewing life easier so you can get the size stitch you need!
