Tula Pink
Cascading Ribbons and a Loopy Meander
Arlene brought in this top recently for me to quilt. I love the choice of fabrics and the setting! Tula Pink's clamshell fabric appears to be the focus fabric that provided the inspiration for the other colors used in the top. The same clamshell fabric is also the backing fabric.
This is what I would call a contemporary quilt. If you look at the structure, you will see that it is actually quite simple - plain setting blocks with sashing and half-square triangle units as the cornerstones.
What makes the design interesting and magical is Arlene's arrangement of the sashing and HSTs so that the colors cascade like a waterfall from the upper right to the lower left. She and her granddaughter worked closely on the placement of colors to achieve this beautiful effect.
To allow the beauty of the design to show through, I selected a simple all-over looping meander. Using a neutral thread also allowed the top to be the "star".
What a personal touch to add to a dorm room or bedroom - a quilt that Arlene's granddaughter was such a part of from the very beginning. I suspect that she will treasure this quilt for many years!
