Preparing for Your Rental
What to Bring
Please bring your quilt top, making sure it is flat and pressed. You may also bring your own backing and batting, or purchase them in-store if you prefer. It is helpful to bring a small scrap of fabric from your quilt top, about 4″ x 6″, to use for setting thread tension. Please do not baste your quilt before your rental. Bring your quilt top, batting, and backing as three separate layers, as each one is loaded onto its own pole on the frame.
Backing & Batting Requirements
Your backing and batting must each be at least 8″ larger than your quilt top on all sides. For example, if your quilt top measures 60″ x 70″, your backing and batting should be approximately 68″ x 78″. We offer a wide selection of batting, including cotton, 80/20 blends, polyester, and wool. Not all battings hold up well to the handling required on a longarm, but we carry options that perform beautifully. As a general guideline, please do not bring Fairfield, Mountain Mist, or JoAnn’s house brand batting, as they tend not to perform well on the frame. Most other brands work great, and if you are unsure, we are happy to help you choose something that will be successful. You will also find a large selection of backing fabrics in-store, including many wide back options.
If You Are Piecing Your Backing
If you are piecing your backing, please remove all selvages before sewing. Use a ½″ seam allowance and a short stitch length, typically between 1.6 and 1.8. Press your seams open to reduce bulk and help the backing load smoothly on the frame. When possible, plan your seams to run parallel to the frame rails. If you are using minky or cuddle fabrics, be aware that they stretch more in one direction than the other. To prevent distortion, load the fabric with the most stable grain running between the bars, not the stretchiest direction.
