Over time you will wear a groove in the soft metal that your pigtail thread guides are made out of. If you run a lot of metallic or monofilament, you'll run a groove in the metal faster than if you run regular thread. A groove in your pigtail will cause frustrating top thread breaks. Having a couple of extra pigtails on hand is always a good idea.
