A machine that makes a stitch no sewing machine can
Sashiko is the Japanese running stitch: a line of even dashes with even gaps, worked by hand with a long needle, traditionally in white on indigo. It takes a very long time. The Sashiko 2 makes that stitch by machine, and it does it with a latch needle and a latch wire rather than a lockstitch, so what lands on the fabric genuinely looks hand-stitched instead of looking like a machine imitating one. It sews one stitch, at 400 stitches a minute, and it is the only machine of its kind. It doesn't use a top thread at all! It's like magic!

Dashes on top, and thread only in the bobbin
A normal sewing machine locks a top thread against a bobbin thread, which is why a machine straight stitch reads as a machine straight stitch from across the room. The Sashiko 2 uses a specialty latch needle working with a latch wire to lay a running stitch on the surface of the fabric instead. You get the dash-and-gap rhythm of hand sashiko, in a fraction of the time, on quilts, on boro-style mending, on garment details and on trim.
Two sliders: the dash, and the gap
Stitch length runs from 2mm to 5mm on one slider, and stitch spacing runs from 2mm to 5mm on another. Those two controls are the entire aesthetic of sashiko. A long dash with a small gap reads as a solid decorative line; a short dash with a wide gap reads as traditional hand work. Being able to set them independently, and to change them mid-project, is what lets you match an existing piece or design your own rhythm rather than accept one setting.
Nine inches of room, and free-flow stitching
There are 9 inches to the right of the needle, which is enough to work across a quilt block or a jacket back rather than only along an edge. The presser foot height and pressure both adjust, and raising the foot is what gives you free-flow work: you move the fabric and the machine keeps laying an even stitch, so a curve or a spiral is drawn rather than followed. The needle stops up or down on a programmable setting, and an LED panel tells you whether the machine is making a stitch or a space.
What you will actually use it for
Big-stitch quilting, where the quilting line is meant to be seen. Boro and visible mending, patching worn denim or a much-loved jacket with sashiko holding the patch. Quilt accents and borders where a straight machine line would look flat. Couching a heavier thread or a fine yarn to the surface. Garment details on a collar, a cuff or a pocket. And trim work on bags and home decor. It takes 30 weight thread or lighter, which covers most of what a quilter already owns.
