It puts the quilting design on the quilt before you stitch it
The Radiance is the top of Baby Lock's line, and the reason sewists want one is the impressive projector. IQ Live Stitch shines the design onto the fabric itself at full size, so you can see a motif sitting on the block, check that it clears the seam, and move it before a needle goes anywhere near it. Add StitchSync stitch regulation, an 11 5/8 by 18 1/4 inch hoop and 14.1 inches to the right of the needle, and the three things that usually slow a full-size quilt down all get easier at once.

Meet the Baby Lock Radiance
IQ Live Stitch, and why the background colors matter
The projector throws an 8 by 5 inch image onto your fabric, showing the stitch or the embroidery design at the size it will actually stitch. What makes it usable on real quilts is the 16 selectable background colors: a projection that vanishes on a dark batik or a busy print becomes readable again when you change the background behind it. For sewing there are projected guidelines with 16 colors, 3 patterns, 6 sub-patterns and 8 angle settings, so you can follow a crosshatch across a whole top without marking it in chalk first.
StitchSync keeps your stitch length even
The stitch regulator attachment reads how fast you are moving the quilt and drives the needle to match, so your stitches stay the same length whether you are inching around a feather or moving quickly across open background. There are three modes. Intermittent only stitches when the fabric moves, which is the friendliest way to learn. Continuous keeps a minimum rate going for smoother flow at speed. Basting lays long stitches for tacking layers. Three soles come with it: quilting, open toe for visibility, and echo quilting for keeping an even distance.
Fourteen inches of open bed, lit the whole way
There are 14.1 inches to the right of the needle, which is more than any other Baby Lock domestic machine, and the LED lighting runs the whole 14.1 inches with five brightness settings. A rolled king-size quilt has somewhere to go. The Radiance sews at 1,050 stitches a minute, the knee lift is adjustable to three positions, and the presser foot lifts 10mm automatically and 13mm by hand. The Automatic Fabric Sensor System sets pressure and tension for what is under the foot, and Advanced Pivoting lifts the foot when you stop so you can turn a corner without letting go.
Baby Lock's largest hoop, and a square one for blocks
The 11 5/8 by 18 1/4 inch hoop is the largest Baby Lock makes, and eighteen inches means an oversized quilt block, a jacket back or an edge-to-edge design will go in all at once. Three more hoops come with it. The Radiance will hold a design of up to 850,000 stitches with as many as 127 color changes, and it embroiders at 1,050 stitches a minute.
1,858 designs, and a way to make your own
There are 1,858 built-in designs, among them 381 Baby Lock exclusives, 240 large decorative, 74 quilting, 40 couching and 7 crochet lace, plus 140 frame patterns and 38 fonts. When you want something that is not in there, IQ Designer lets you draw it on the screen, scan artwork using the scanning frame and magnets that come with the machine, or send an image across wirelessly. Picture Play goes further and turns a photograph into an embroidery design for you, accepting images up to 6MB.
Sewing, on a machine people buy for the embroidery
The Radiance has 1,610 built-in stitches, and the sewing side is not an afterthought. Among them are 184 utility stitches including 15 one-step buttonhole styles and a four-step custom buttonhole, 527 decorative, 79 decorative satin, 21 cross stitch, 20 tapering stitches, 3 hand-look quilting stitches and 4 sewing alphabets. Stitch width goes to 7mm and length from 0 to 5mm. There is a Digital Dual-Feed system for keeping the top layer of a quilt sandwich moving with the bottom one, and 17 presser feet come with the machine.
Where the Radiance sits in the line
Nothing sits above it. Baby Lock calls the Radiance its most advanced sewing and embroidery machine, and the specification bears that out. The machine below it in our showroom is the Altair 2, which is a wonderful machine with a 9.5 by 14 inch field, IQ Designer and the camera positioning app. What the Radiance adds on top is the projector, the stitch regulator, roughly a quarter more embroidery area in one hooping, nearly three more inches of throat, and about double the built-in design library. If you quilt full-size tops and you want to stop marking them, that is the combination worth coming to see.

If you live outside of Louisville, any Baby Lock dealer in the country will service your machine under warranty. Every machine we sell also comes with owner classes, and on a machine of this size the classes are how the projector and the stitch regulator become things you use every day rather than features on a list.
