If you want it finished for this October, the calendar matters more than the fabric does.

A wall hanging or a table runner from a panel is a weekend, and there is time for that well into the month. A lap quilt pieced from a kit is realistically a few weeks of evenings, plus quilting and binding, so starting in early September is comfortable and starting in October is a push. A bed sized Halloween quilt started now is a next year quilt. Most seasonal quilts are made the year before they are used.

Panels Are the Shortcut

A fabric panel is a printed scene or block set, ready to use as it is. Add a border, a backing and some quilting, and a panel becomes a finished wall hanging faster than any pieced project can.

Most Halloween Fabric Is on Black, and Black Behaves Differently

Halloween prints are overwhelmingly printed on black or near black backgrounds. Black or charcoal batting is worth considering for a dark quilt.

If a print is going into a specific quilt, buy the full yardage for that quilt now rather than a sample amount.

What thread should I use on black Halloween fabric?

It depends on whether you want the quilting seen. Matched black thread makes stitching disappear into the fabric and hides any wobble. A contrasting thread turns the quilting into a design of its own, and on a dark ground that can look spectacular.

What batting should I use with dark Halloween fabric?

Consider a black or charcoal batting rather than a white one. White batting can shadow through a dark top in thinner areas.

Can I use a fabric panel as a quilt on its own?

Yes, and for Halloween that is often the best use of one. Add a border to bring it up to the size you want, layer it with backing and batting, quilt it and bind it.

Panels also work cut up, as blocks set among pieced ones, if you want something larger than the panel itself.

Do Halloween quilt kits include the backing?

Usually not. Most kits cover the quilt top and the binding, and backing is bought separately, which is why we keep backing kits and wide backing alongside them.

Check each kit listing, since it varies by manufacturer, and add the backing at the same time rather than discovering the gap when the top is finished.

Is Halloween fabric only good for Halloween?

The pumpkins are not. Pumpkin, harvest and moody floral prints carry a Halloween quilt comfortably from September through Thanksgiving, which stretches a six week season into three months.

Ghosts, skeletons and haunted houses are more committed.
