Variety is the Spice of Life
The great thing about quilting is that you never have to make the same quilt twice. Even when you mean to, they will often grow and develop into different designs.
Melanie had intended to make five identical memorial quilts, one for each of her siblings and herself. Instead she had five slightly different quilts with very similar designs!
Every quilt has the hearts, which were made from her dad's shirts, wood grain fabric because he was a woodworker, and frog fabric because he called his children "frogs."
The last one in the series here is altered by mistake. The rows got switched somehow and created a different pattern. She said she didn’t even notice until she was ready to bind it!
She quilted each quilt with the Airborne pantograph. These quilts are such thoughtful gifts for her siblings. I'm sure no one will mind that the quilts are all a little different!
This is Bonnie’s “Women of the Bible” quilt. This is a traditional sampler quilt style involving these individually unique blocks. Isn’t it lovely! I love the bright colors she used as well as setting it all in a plain dark background. Bonnie quilted her quilt with the Square Spiral pantograph. Don't you love the quilty texture it adds?
Colleen created this fun piece using preprinted squares highlighting our National Parks. Colleen and her husband love to travel to all the parks and she collected each piece at the parks she visited during their 100th anniversary celebrations. She finished it with some free hand wavy lines. I love the borders she added around the outside.
Variety doesn't have to be in the piecing. This Autumn themed table topper also by Colleen, finished with a free hand meander, is a beautiful example of what can be done with fabric choice. There is a real variety of color here, but all goes together so well.
Don’t be afraid to mix it up and add some variety to your quilting!
