Sandy's All-Star Sports Quilt
So often we want to make a quilt for gifts. When giving to a fellow crafts person, it can be easy to create something they will appreciate. Classic quilt blocks are always popular to people who appreciate and understand the history of quilting. But what about a teenage boy? Especially if he isn’t interested in quilts. Sandy created this amazing quilt for a grandson that I think anyone, regardless of their interest, would love to have on their bed!
The quilt design is so simple, while at the same time giving the eye plenty to see. Each block is divided in half diagonally with parallel stripes on only the top left half of the square. The rest of the square is just solid white fabric. All the blocks are arranged the same, so there is no secondary design.
Simple and elegant, I can imagine this quilt could be made to fit many different tastes with all kinds of fabrics! Sandy chose sports fabrics, perfect for her grandson. If you look closely you will see pennants, tickets, fields, and jerseys in the blocks’ corners as well as a few plaids and striped fabric.
Sandy had me quilt with an edge to edge design called Shooting Star. The star motif fits well with the sport theme of the fabric. It is also small enough to read well in all the negative space of the white in the blocks, with some of the white area showing a star and some a swirl.
This a beautiful quilt, and a very lucky teenager to have such a beautiful quilt in his room.
