There a large variety of shapes that go into quilts. These next quilts show off a few examples of what can be done with squares. Each is unique and beautiful in their own way. Lynn has made these first two quilts for her granddaughters. The design is called Vegetable Soup and she used vintage styled fabric for both of them. The green sashing in this one really off sets the pastel blocks set on point. In her second quilt, she used more blue fabrics. The yellow sashings give it a brighter feel, but the blocks in the center are the same as the first quilt. What a difference the sashings, corner stones, and borders can make in the over all feel of a quilt. In both quilts she used the Periwinkle pantograph, which is an all over design with sweet little blossoms. It definitely fits in the overall themes of both quilts. This quilt was done by Patricia for her rental certification class. She used fabric with Thomas the train engine and added two plain borders around the outside. With all that is going on in the main fabric, the borders add a nice touch without fighting for dominance. She used our Lorien’s Paisley pantograph to finish this quilt. This basic paisley design has a few swirls and a few petal like structures, so it’s great for any type of quilt, being neither masculine or feminine in feeling. Rena made this beautiful “Lattice of Love” quilt with hot pinks, oranges, and black on white prints. I especially loved her mustache fabrics! Many of the blocks were picked out by her daughter and spoke to her personality. Using the same fabric for either side of all the sashing, makes you really notice the blocks behind the sashings rather than just the on point blocks between the sashings. To keep with the whimsy of the quilt top, she decided to quilt it with our Bubbles design board. Using a design board really keeps the circles perfectly round. It played beautifully against the linear aspect of this quilt. Rena did a great job. Quilt tops are made up of all sorts of shapes. Squares are just one of many. Whether you pick one shape to dominate your quilt, or many shapes to develop a complex design, you can’t go wrong with squares!
