Looky Loo Studio Tour with Jazmine R
We love taking peeks into other people’s quilting studios during our Looky Loo Studio Tour! Each month during our Quilted Joy Clubhouse live meetings we tour the quilting studio of one of our QJ Clubhouse members. Today, let’s take a look back at our tour of Jazmine Rivera's creative space, that she's incorporated into the main living area of her home. Watch the video below to see Jazmine’s Looky Loo Studio Tour!
We wanted to get to know Jazmine a little more, so we asked her a few other questions before we recorded our tour.
How long have you been quilting with a longarm?
I bought a sit-down around 2017. And my first 'true' longarm on a frame, in 2020.
How have you grown your skills?
I do a lot of free motion, and some ruler work. And mostly, it's through practice. I'm also a very -"if I see you do it, I can figure out how to do it, too" person. I watch a lot of videos on fillers, and designs.
What do you find to be the most challenging part of longarm quilting?
Picking designs that will accent, or compliment the quilt top.
Where is your quilting space? Is it a retail space?
My home, 'formal dining room' or 'open concept living room'. This is my 'studio' area.
What do you love about your quilting space?
Just that I have it, honestly. It's a privilege that I didn't have in some of my earlier apartments. I had to work from a two person kitchen table for a long while.
If you could change anything about your quilting space, what would it be?
I'd like another wall for a design wall. And maybe a little more floor space.
Why did you choose an APQS machine?
Quality, and the ability to be more hands on with the machine and repairs, so I could do it on my schedule.
Do you have a computer on your machine? If so, what do you love about it?
Not yet
What advice would you give to a new longarm quilter?
Practice makes progress. And you should look at your work, and how you progress without comparing yourself to others.
What quilting project are you currently working on?
I run a Discord Quilt Guild, and we are doing a 'same fabric challenge' - where we all have the same set of fabrics to choose from (We did Firefly' from RSS/Sarah Watts) and have to make a quilt out of it. I'm finishing the longarming on that right now. And next, I'll be doing a Bonnie Hunter quilt, or a 'Same Sky' I completed.
How would you describe your quilting style?
Traditional, with a Modern twist. I like the look of older blocks, but want to bring them interest and leave behind most of the civil war reproductions (which is what I think most people think of when they think 'quilts'.)
What is your favorite batting and thread?
I'm split between Quilter's Dream and Hobbs. Cotton/Poly blend. And I love Omni, the color choices really.
