Karen's Hummingbird Garden
Karen is a new customer who really touched my heart. Her adult son died quickly and very unexpectedly. She shared his story with me and as a mom, I can't imagine the pain she must feel in her heart. Then she told me that many of his organs were used to help others who've been waiting for their organ donor angel, and her face lit up. I have no way of comprehending the depth of grief loosing a child would bring, but I am so glad she showed me that there can be small moments of joy knowing your son made a difference in so many lives. What a tribute!
As she showed me her quilt I remarked about the hummingbirds found in the fabric and she told me that hummingbirds hold a certain connection for her memories of her son. We settled on a hummingbird edge to edge pattern for the central portion of her quilt top. For the other border of her quilt she fell in love with a butterfly border that pairs up nicely with the garden theme. In honor of her son, I put hearts in the corners. Karen in a nurse who works in the OR and I feel certain she can tangibly see everyday how her work makes a difference in the lives of others. What she can't see is how her son's story has impacted so many others.
